It shows the thesis that contradicts the common ground of the inconsistent permanent phenomena. Here, although the Isvara (Lord) is listed as permanent in the enumeration, in terms of the result, its name has become a subject, so there is no fault of non-establishment. To refute the latter, whatever arises occasionally is pervaded by being empty of permanence, like the last moment of a lamp flame. Sound also arises occasionally, thus establishing the thesis, which shows the contradiction to the common ground of the inconsistent permanent phenomena. Then, since either of the two can establish the pervasion, why is it necessary to show both? To this, some answer that in the path of those with harm, the independent thesis is taught, because those with harm establish that all things are destroyed, and before that, it must be established that all independent things are destroyed independently of causes other than their own cause, which is unreasonable, because the wrong conceptions to be refuted by the two theses are different. For those who want all things to be destroyed, the thesis with harm does not apply; for those who want non-destruction, the independent thesis does not apply. Therefore, to counter the two wrong conceptions, two theses are taught separately. To counter the view that all things are not destroyed, the thesis with harm is taught; and for the wrong conception that generally destroys, but relies on the cause of destruction that arises after its own cause, relying on other things to be destroyed, the independent thesis is taught. Secondly, there are two methods for determining the relationship of that arising: identifying the cause and effect to be determined, and the manner of how to determine it. First, the definitions of cause and effect are, respectively: by the power of benefiting one's other subsequent, to follow and cease accordingly; by the power of benefiting one's other preceding, to follow and cease accordingly. Secondly, there are three divisions: refutation, establishment, and abandonment. First, some say that it is determined by five sets of valid cognitions: first, the valid cognition of not perceiving both fire and smoke, then the valid cognition of perceiving fire, then the valid cognition of perceiving smoke, then the valid cognition of not perceiving fire, then the valid cognition of not perceiving smoke, through these it is determined. This is unreasonable, because even with five sets of objects following and ceasing, it is not possible to determine it as cause and effect.

Because the three cycles of nature's following and reversing can also determine. The first reason is established, otherwise, in some cases, neither the sound of a drum nor the sunlight is observed. Then the sound of a drum is observed. Then the sunlight is observed. Then the sound of a drum is not observed. Then the sunlight is also not observed, therefore, those two should also become cause and effect. The second reason is established, because for the following and reversing of nature, any of the three cycles of following that are not observed to precede, and the three cycles of reversing that are observed to precede, can determine cause and effect. Otherwise, if five cycles must be determined, then, if it is cause and effect, it should become necessary to determine both the prior and posterior limits. If it is a valid cognition that determines cause and effect, then it is necessary that both cause and effect are not observed at first, and that both cause and effect are not observed at the end. Some people think that when determining through the three cycles of valid cognition, only the three cycles of reversing that are observed to precede are necessary, which is also unreasonable, because if it is determined as cause and effect, there is the fault of the prior limit not being determined. Secondly, there are two ways of determining cause and effect where the prior limit is not determined, and ways of determining cause and effect where the posterior limit is not determined. The first is, the three cycles of observing what precedes, that is, first seeing the effect of smoke arising, then not seeing the cause of arising, then determining through the exclusion of others by not seeing the effect that is produced. The latter is, the special three cycles of not observing what precedes, that is, first in a clean place, both fire and smoke are possible to appear but are not observed, then after seeing the fire, the exclusion of others of the fire is grasped by conceptual thought, then after seeing the smoke, the exclusion of others of the smoke is grasped by conceptual thought, so that with a mind of conceptual thought, it is determined that this present smoke will not arise without that previous fire, thereby determining the relationship. Third, if it is determined by any of the three cycles, then it contradicts what is said in the "Praise of Dependent Arising": "If one sees what, one does not see seeing, when that is not seen, one does not see that, because it is the nature of effect, one can know for sure, even without a shower." If you say so, there is no fault, because this is in terms of both ways of determining.
