Moreover, that which is composed of many limbs is considered to be possessed of limbs, that which is composed of many moments is considered to be continuous, and letters, names, and words are also not established as real entities. Third, refuting other schools that hold universals to be non-existent. This is divided into two parts: reality and refuting arguments. The first part is: Some say that if it is a universal, it must be non-existent, and if its own particulars are not established, then it is a universal, which is the view of the seven schools. Therefore, forms, sounds, and so on, fire, water, and so on, pots, felt, and so on, are all permanent. They say this. To refute this, there are five obstacles: direct perception, inference by the power of things, scripture, commitment, and self-contradiction. The first is: Sound, the subject, is not established as audible by direct auditory perception because you are permanent. If you admit it, then sound is not audible, which is not refuted by direct auditory perception. The second is: Sound is permanent, which is contradicted by inference by the power of things, because from the sign of being produced, it is established that sound is impermanent. The third is: If the reason is not established, because being produced is not a valid reason for establishing that sound is impermanent. Then, the Pramāṇavārttika says, "Merely having destruction is related, therefore sound itself is impermanent." And "Whatever exists will be destroyed, like a pot, sound also exists, this is the nature sign." This contradicts the above statement. Furthermore, the Vedic followers believe that the sound of the Vedas is permanent, which the glorious Dharmakīrti refutes with many kinds of reasoning, which is unreasonable, because the sound of the Vedas is permanent, which is in accordance with reality. The fourth is: If, when establishing that sound is impermanent with the sign of being produced, it is establishing that the own-character of sound is impermanent, then there is no fault of contradicting the scripture mentioned above. Then, is it refuting and establishing what is considered to be the own-character of sound's exclusion of others, or is it refuting and establishing the own-character? If it is the former, then it is not directly establishing that sound is impermanent with the sign of being produced, but rather it is considered to be directly establishing that the own-character of sound is impermanent, which contradicts the commitment. If it is the latter, then it contradicts the view that the three aspects of the known sign, property, and meaning are exclusions of others. Furthermore, in the treatises that one has committed to as valid, substance and attribute, universal and particular, establishing and

“Other exclusions, distinctions and non-distinctions. Other discussions are explained elsewhere. I wish to explain according to the scriptures.” In the commentary on this, substance and generality are objects, distinction and non-distinction are consciousness, and appearance and exclusion are the modes of apprehension, which is contrary to the definite explanation, because things and substances, etc., are generally accepted. In the biography of the Dharma Lord composed by Lodrak All-Knowing, the Kashmiri Pandit said, “I don’t know many bits and pieces, blue exists in meaning.” This statement is also contrary to understanding all the key points of other exclusions, because blue is generally accepted. So, how did he understand all the key points of other exclusions? Blue and sound, etc., exist in their respective states on the meaning of self-character, so there is no denial or establishment, but there are additions such as blue is non-blue and sound is permanent, etc., and denial and establishment are done to eliminate all the additions that exist. At that time, in order to establish that sound is impermanent, the sound that is permanent is eliminated in the mind of other exclusions. Moreover, the sound that does not distinguish between substance and negation is only established as impermanent, which is the meaning. Therefore, those who think that sound is permanent hold the sound that exists in meaning and the sound in front of exclusion as one, so it is okay to do so when entering, but doing so when explaining the reality is not understanding the key points of other exclusions. The great master said, “Be skilled by distinguishing when explaining, and obtain by confusing when entering.” For this reason. The fifth is that the sound is permanent, which is actually saying that the sound is permanent, and the implication of saying sound is saying impermanent. The second is, so, if wood is established as a substance, is it the same or different from Shapa's substance? Then, is the valid cognition manifest or inferential? This should be asked. If the valid cognition that has become a distinction is inference, and the valid cognition that has become non-distinction is manifest, and there is no valid cognition that has changed from these two, then the wood that has become Shapa is the same substance as Shapa, and the wood that is not Shapa is a different substance from Shapa, and there is no wood that has changed from these two. This is how the analogy is made. If the wood is the subject, it is the same substance as Shapa.
