Because of the power of attachment, self-nature appears as the confusion of the two graspers, the grasper and the grasped. For example, for someone with blurred vision, the appearance of hair falling out is not in accordance with the Dharma. The second part has three points: grasping aspect is the self-experiencing, establishing self-awareness; self-awareness is the measure of all knowledge; refuting the contradiction with the statement that self-awareness is valid. The first point is: So, in the view of the Vijnanavada school, what is the measure and result of self-awareness? Answer: The knowledge that appears as an object, has the nature of Dharma. The grasping aspect that you completely cut off is the self-awareness, because you yourself are the nature of the grasping aspect that completely cuts off the object. The grasping aspect has the nature of Dharma, and is the basis for establishing self-awareness, because it can express self-awareness. The second point is: For example, the knowledge that appears as an object, has the nature of Dharma. You are the object to be measured, the grasping aspect that you completely cut off is valid, and the self-awareness that you experience is established as the result, because you are knowledge. For example, in the school that believes that appearances are real, when desire is considered the object to be measured, the characteristics of self-awareness are established as valid and the result. To prove this: Answer: Desire and so on have the nature of Dharma, and can be experienced by oneself, because they arise as the nature of experiencing oneself, just as it is believed. In the view of the Vijnanavada school, the knowledge that appears as an object, has the nature of Dharma. The very act of allowing oneself to be experienced is valid, is the object to be measured by oneself, and the self-awareness that experiences it is established as the result, because it arises as the nature of experiencing oneself. The third point is: If the grasping aspect or what can be self-experienced is valid, then it contradicts what Acharya Dignāga said that self-awareness is valid, is that so? Answer: Acharya Dignāga has the nature of Dharma. Here, the grasping aspect and experience itself are said to be valid, and your statement that self-awareness is valid is not contradictory, because you are considering it from the aspect of the function of self-awareness and saying it is valid. Second, regarding the explanation of the arguments for that view, there are two points: explaining the reasoning for the arguments of the two ways; explaining the reasoning for the arguments of self-awareness. The first part has two points: explaining the object of knowledge and that knowledge, and arguing for it; explaining the later memory, and arguing for it. The first part has seven points: arguing through the difference of having or not having doubt; arguing through the difference of many or few appearances; arguing through the certainty of simultaneous perception as the basis; arguing through the clarity or unclearness of the sense consciousness.

It is established by that. It is established by the appearance of the mandala even though it is non-existent. It is established by the three differences of near, far, and intermediate. It is established by the fact that even though the object of grasping ceases, there is still appearance. The first has two parts: it is established by the arising of meaning in the form of meaning; it is established by the appearance of meaning in the form of non-meaning. The first is: In summary: "The knowledge of the object, that knowledge, from the distinction, is indeed twofold." As for the meaning of what was said, there are two reasons of the author himself and five reasons of the treatise, making seven in total. The first is: Example: The direct perception of the sense of form is the subject. Although all three of your conditions are the same as your cause, you will arise as possessing the form of form, because that arising is the nature of dependent origination. For example, although food and so on are the cause of a child, the offspring is born resembling the form of either parent. That, form, is the subject. Although you and the other two conditions are the same as the cause of the direct perception of the sense of form, you have a reason to be placed as the object of the direct perception of the sense of form, because you are the creator of the form of your own kind from your own side to the direct perception of the sense of form. The second has two parts: because there is no meaning, there is no doubt of no form. Refuting the arguments of others who want to allow it to be meaningful. The first is: Meaning: The knowledge of the object to be grasped is the subject. There may be doubt that there is no form that has become its own nature, because the meaning itself appears to be real. Example: The conceptual thought that grasps the past pot is the subject. The mind itself is established as having two aspects, because there is an appearance of both object and subject, and the appearance as an object is not a meaning other than itself. Therefore, that is the subject. It is established that its own nature is awareness, because its own nature has two aspects. The second has five parts: Refuting that the genus is meaningful. Refuting the meaningful that is not meaningful. Refuting the meaningful other than that. Refuting that the form arises from meaning. Refuting that it is different from consciousness. The first is: Example: That which appears in the memory consciousness of remembering the past blue is the subject. It is not the genus of blue, because it appears as different such as blue. Furthermore, is that genus of blue permanent or impermanent? If it is impermanent, then that genus of blue is the subject.
