Regarding the necessity of praise, there are two points to explain: first, the necessity of proving that valid cognition has been established, and second, the manner in which subsequent inference is established. The first point is: Deṃ. Praising the Bhagavan through valid cognition is necessary because it is to understand that both direct perception and subsequent inference are established from the Bhagavan's teachings themselves. The second point is: If direct perception has already been established, then how is subsequent inference established? Jesaṃ. The Teacher is the subject, and is considered subsequent inference, because it does not negate that subsequent inference is valid cognition, and it negates that non-valid cognition is valid cognition. Cuṃ. Moreover, in the Teacher's teachings themselves, whatever slightly possesses the nature of arising is of the nature of ceasing, and so on. Such statements are the subject, and through subsequent inference, it is actually clearly explained because it actually shows the true reason possessing the three modes. Generally, the reason possessing the three modes is the basis of subsequent inference. The third point is: Valid cognition, etc. This is the explanation of the second chapter. Third, in order to explain the remaining two chapters that are opportune, it is divided into two parts: first, explaining direct perception, and second, explaining subsequent inference for the sake of others. The first part is divided into three points: first, introducing the connection through association; in the middle, explaining the text of the chapter itself; and finally, concluding with the title. The first point is: The reason why Lha is explaining the treatise on the definition of valid cognition is self-benefiting subsequent inference, and the explanation of the offering praise of the Sutra, that is, the explanation of the establishment of valid cognition has been completed. Now, the treatise on the definition of valid cognition will be explained, and this view has been explained before. The second part is divided into two points: first, explaining the common characteristics of the two valid cognitions, and second, determining the topic at hand—direct perception. The first part is divided into two points: first, establishing that valid cognition is two, and second, refuting the erroneous view that there are other numbers. The first part is divided into three points: first, listing the arguments for establishing it as two; second, establishing the three modes of that argument; and third, showing that other numbers are eliminated by those three modes. The first point is: In general, "Direct perception and subsequent inference are the two ways of measuring valid cognition." Explaining the meaning of this sentence is: The object to be measured—valid cognition is the subject, and from the perspective of the way of entering, it is determined as direct perception and subsequent inference, because from the perspective of the way of entering, the object to be measured is determined as self and common. The second part is divided into two points: first, establishing the property of the subject, and second, establishing pervasion.

Therefore, it is necessary to establish the proof that the object of measurement must be two. This is to explain the self-nature of the two objects of measurement to be proven. First, if it is not established that the object of measurement must be two, because there are things that are both blue lotuses and universals, then, (seed syllable: དོཾན།) the object of measurement, as the subject, there is no aggregate that is both self-character and universal, because there is no aggregate that is both able to function and unable to function. If it is thought that hairs, etc., that appear to the mistaken sense consciousness are objects of measurement that are neither self-character nor universal, then, (seed syllable: སྐྲ།ཾ) that, as the subject, is not the object of measurement of sense consciousness, because there is no subsequent definitive knowledge that determines it to be the object of measurement of sense consciousness. (seed syllable: འདྲཾ།) Therefore, the object of measurement of the way of valid cognition, as the subject, is definitely two in number, because it is definitely two, common and uncommon, and it is definitely two, the object of expression and the non-object, and it is definitely two, the appearing object of conceptualization and the appearing object of non-conceptual wisdom. The second part has three points: from the perspective of the way of establishment, reveal the two, self-character and universal; summarize the established object of measurement into self-character; refute the contradiction with the saying of two. The first part has three points: reveal the previously mentioned two views as the basis of characteristics; examine whether the characteristics exist in things; reveal the difference of universal characteristics. The first part has two points: the real basis of characteristics; refuting arguments. First, if you ask what is the basis of the characteristics of the two objects of measurement? (seed syllable: དོནཾ།) Self-character, as the subject, you have a basis of characteristics, because ultimately being able to function, and uncommon things, etc., are your basis of characteristics. Universal, as the subject, you have a basis of characteristics, because ultimately being unable to function, and common things, etc., are your basis of characteristics. The second part has three points: refuting the argument against the first basis of characteristics; refuting the argument against both bases of characteristics; refuting the argument against the latter basis of characteristics. First, if the proponent of no self-nature says that ultimately being able to function should not be the characteristic of self-character, because it does not exist, then, it is established that it exists, because the ability of a seed to produce a sprout is seen by valid cognition. If it is thought that the seed producing a sprout is conventional, then, the Sautrantika, as the subject, and the proponent of no self-nature, and the meaning
