If it is said that the clear self-character cannot be obtained, then, the designation called "tree," the dharma, even if the clear self-character of the tree is not directly stated, it can make the clear self-character of the tree established, because by generating the conceptualization of grasping the tree with three characteristics, thereby abandoning non-tree and engaging with tree, and because it is a meaningful term that relies on the clear self-character of the tree. The conceptualization of grasping the tree, the meaningful dharma, has three characteristics, namely, the appearance that appears to oneself appears as the external tree, and it arises through the lineage from its own cause, the clear self-character of the tree, and the appearance that appears to oneself is something that does not exist in the tree. Therefore, the sound called "tree," the dharma, is the object of the tree's exclusion of others, because for the image of the conceptualization that relies on the clear self-character of the tree, the imputation of the tree is directly stated. Third, regarding this, there are four ways to refute the arguments of other schools: refuting the fault of conceptualizations being mutually dependent, refuting that without something to be cut off, there is no exclusion and entry, refuting the examination of whether opposites exist or not, refuting the argument that a common basis cannot exist and change. The first has four points: stating the fault spoken by others, refuting it with the same reason, generating certainty with the answer of the object, establishing that all sounds have a definite object to be grasped. The first point is: ཤིངཾ་(Tibetan, वृक्षं,vṛkṣaṃ,tree). The examiner says, tree, dharma, you and non-you both become the fault of conceptualizations being mutually dependent. The conceptualization that grasps you must grasp you by cutting off non-you. The conceptualization that grasps non-you must grasp non-you by cutting off you. If you admit, then, this, dharma, both you and non-you become the fault of having no grasp. Because if there is no mind that has previously grasped either you or non-you, then it pervades not grasping the other. Therefore, it is impossible to name through the way of excluding others. If you say so, the second point is: དེཾ། In your own system, does the sound called "tree" completely cut off non-tree, or does it not cut off? If according to the first case, then the person who uses the name of tree, dharma, before the name of tree, becomes the fault of not knowing non-tree. Because before the name of tree, there is no grasping of the meaning of tree. If you admit, then, before the name of tree, it becomes the fault of not being able to cut off non-tree. If according to the second case, then the person who seeks the meaning of tree, dharma.

It is impossible for the word "tree" to refer only to trees, because the word "tree" does not exclude non-trees. For example, just as the word "tree" does not exclude non-Shapa trees, it is impossible for it to refer only to Shapa trees. Question: If one thinks that the word "tree" excludes non-trees, but does not establish trees, but indicates a clear tree with the reason of possessing the general nature of a tree, and expresses "this is a tree," and also at the time of naming, because things possessing the general nature of a tree will be understood as trees, then the previous two faults are absent. Then, the clear self-character of the tree in front, possessing the general nature of a tree, as a subject, it is unreasonable for you to directly apply the symbol of a tree, because if the symbol is applied in the manner of excluding non-possession of the symbol, there is a possibility of referring to non-trees, and if the symbol is applied in the manner of excluding possession of others, there is a fault of mutual dependence in understanding, because the faults remain in place. The third is: First, the conceptual mind that grasps the generality of a tree as one, relying on the objects of clear trees, as a subject, that person who possesses you in their continuum is able to distinguish between tree and non-tree separately before the symbol of a tree, because the appearance of a tree that appears to you is a concept that clings to being inseparable from a tree. Answer: That subject, the appearance of a tree that appears to oneself clings to being inseparable from the external tree, there is a reason to apply the symbol of a tree, because applying it in this way will confuse the two as one, thereby referring to the external tree. The fourth is: Question: The word "vase" is used to refer to a vase by excluding non-vases, because it refers only to a vase among vases and non-vases. The second is to refute that there is no exclusive reference without something to be excluded: If words such as tree are referred to by exclusion, then words such as knowable will not be referred to by exclusion, because there is no non-knowable to be excluded, then, Answer: Words such as knowable will exclude the object of the listener's doubt, because any symbol used to express meaning, if it does not exclude the object of doubt in the listener's mind, then there is no need to use the symbol. The third is to examine whether the opposite entity exists or not.
