It does not change, because the distinctions of clear sounds are not abandoned. The entry of clear sounds is also imputed, because it expresses other common meanings. These are the words of Dignāga. The third part has three points: it shows that the fault falls on others; it shows that oneself does not have that fault; and it clearly explains the way the fault falls on others. The first point: gaṃ. (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Chinese literal meaning) Vaiśeṣika, you are liable to unreasonable criticisms such as the sixth case and word division, because you are an opponent who asserts that the expressive sound enters the object with real authority. The second point: phyiṃ. (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Chinese literal meaning) Dharmakīrti, you will not have unreasonable criticisms such as the sixth case and word division, because you are a wise person who asserts that the expressive sound does not enter the object with real authority. The third point: btsunaṃ. (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Chinese literal meaning) A single woman, you will not have the plural word "consorts," because you are not many. Six cities, you will not have the singular word "a row of mansions," because you are not one. Space, you will not have the sixth case "the nature of space," and the word "the essence of space is space itself," because you do not have separate objects to be expressed. Second, there are three points to the entry of sounds that gather separate things into one by eliminating conceptualization: it shows that conceptualization establishes the general characteristic of a class; it explains the appearance of the conceptualization that establishes; and it establishes other names for it. The first part has four points: separate appearances as one establish the general characteristic of a class; it refutes that the imputation is established on the object; therefore, it shows that the conceptualization that holds the general characteristic is mistaken; and it explains the cause of the lineage of that mistake. The first point: thaṃ. (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Chinese literal meaning) The conceptualization that holds the general characteristic of trees, you will have the appearance of separate trees as the nature of trees with obscuration, because for it, its own apprehended aspect obscures it. sgribaṃ. (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Chinese literal meaning) That, you will have the appearance of separate trees as the nature of trees as one, because of the dominance of the apprehended aspect of the obscurer, you will appear that way. deṃ. (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Chinese literal meaning) Separate trees, you will have the general characteristic of trees in front of the separate, because in front of you, the nature of trees appears as one. The second point: deṃ. (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Chinese literal meaning) The general characteristic of trees,

Because it is not truly existent, but is imputed by the conceptual thought that grasps at a tree. If it were truly existent, would the universal of a tree be the same entity as the individual trees, or a different entity? If the former, then, the individual trees, as the subject, do not have a universal of a tree that is the same entity as you, because you are different entities. If the latter, then, it, as the subject, does not have a universal of a tree that is different from you, because it is not perceived by valid cognition. If the appearance of the conceptual thought that grasps at a tree is not the universal of a tree, then, the appearance of the conceptual thought that grasps at a tree, as the subject, is not the universal of a tree without relying on the illusion of a tree, because it is the entity of the conceptual thought that grasps at a tree. Third, therefore, the conceptual thought that grasps at the universal of a tree, as the subject, is an illusion, because it is a mind that grasps the different entities of the individual trees as the same nature of a tree. The fourth point has two parts: identifying the cause of the lineage, and refuting the unreasonableness of being a cause. The first point is: what is the cause of grasping at the universal? The individual trees, as the subject, are the cause of the conceptual thought that grasps at the universal of a tree in accordance with meaning, because it is the cause of its lineage. The second point has two parts: establishing the different causes of the two similar examples, and negating the other substantial universal that is the cause of the two contradictions. The first point is: if the individual trees do not have a substantial universal and are different entities, then how do they generate a single grasping at the universal of a tree? The individual trees, as the subject, even if they do not have a substantial universal and are different entities, will generate a conceptual thought that grasps at the universal of a tree in accordance with meaning, because it is naturally determined to generate it. For example, even if the universal of a tree does not have a substantial universal and is a different entity, the three conditions of the eye, etc., will generate their result—a single eye consciousness, and like the medicines haritaki, vibhitaka, and amalaki, etc., used together or separately, will pacify fever, but others like Terminalia chebula will not. The second point is: if it is said that haritaki, etc., have a single substantial universal of medicine, so they can pacify fever, therefore this example is not established, then, the universal of medicine, as the subject, does not pacify fever, because the individual medicines may not have differences. If it is not pervasive, then, the individual medicines may not have differences in taste and potency due to the quality of the field, etc. Therefore, the universal of medicine, as the subject, pacifies
