Focusing on the suffering of others does not lead to the fault of being excessively afflicted by the suffering of others. This is because yogis do not experience the suffering of others, but are afflicted by it and benefit others with happiness. When the mind itself appears as the nature of suffering, that is affliction; if the nature does not arise, merely focusing on suffering is only knowing it, not experiencing it. Therefore, merely focusing on suffering is not experiencing it, and thus, for all cognitions, focusing and experiencing are different. This is because what arises from things similar to things is the object of focus, while what arises clearly as the nature of experience is self-experience. Secondly, if it is not manifest, it becomes too general, divided into two: one's own mind will be cognized from signs; and pointing out what is harmful to admitting this. The first point is: Furthermore, the sense consciousnesses that apprehend forms, etc., existing in one's own continuum, should become something that must be cognized through signs, because one's own direct valid cognition cannot be established, and relative to oneself, it is a measurable hidden phenomenon. The second point is divided into two: refuting that sense consciousness is cognized from signs; and refuting that mental consciousness is cognized from signs. The first point is divided into three: examining what the reason for sense consciousness is; after examination, the reason itself cannot be established; even if established, the connection cannot be determined. The first point is: If the former is admitted, then the sign used to prove that one has sense consciousness is either the five senses such as the eye, or objects such as forms, or sense consciousness itself, or the previous moment of attention? If asked which of these will become a sign, then these alone are not sufficient to be recognized as a sign, because the union of self and consciousness, etc., is also a cause of sense consciousness, so it should also be recognized as a sign. If so, then apart from the collection of the cause sense, object, attention, and the effect sense consciousness, the union of self and consciousness, etc., should become unrelated to sense consciousness, because the ability to directly produce sense consciousness is not seen. The second point is divided into three: the four cannot be established as signs; the clarity of objects cannot be established as signs; the nature of consciousness cannot be established as a sign. The first point is:

Is. Regarding the four examinations as signs of mental intention, the senses, as the subject, are not a correct sign to establish that Devadatta has mental intention in his own continuum, because mental intention is mistaken, that is, when sleeping and fainting, you exist but there is no mental intention. Things are also the subject, and the senses are also not a correct sign to establish that Devadatta has mental intention in his own continuum, because mental intention is mistaken, that is, you exist but there is no mental intention when you close your eyes. The mind and attention are also the subject, becoming non-valid, because they are consciousness. The pervasion is admitted, consciousness is not established by direct perception, and no sign to establish it can be found. If admitted, then the mind and attention, as the subject, are not correct signs, because they are non-valid. The second part is divided into two parts: stating the assertion, refuting it. The first part is: if it is thought that merely things are not signs, but the appearance of things themselves is a sign to establish mental intention. The second part is divided into two parts: appearance distinguished by mind is not a reason, appearance distinguished by things is not a reason. The first part is: then is the appearance of things the mind that appears things, or the things that appear by the mind? If it is the former, then the appearance of things itself, as the subject, is not established by Devadatta's own valid cognition, because is it not consciousness? That is, it is consciousness. If admitted, then it is not a correct sign to establish that Devadatta has mental intention in his own continuum. Showing that the mind is not established by valid cognition, this as the subject, there is also another necessity, because it eliminates the view that the things that appear by the mind are signs of the mind, that is, how is the mind, as the subject, the things that appear by you are not determined by valid cognition, because the appearance is what you are experiencing and is not established by valid cognition. If admitted, therefore it is not a sign. The second part is divided into three parts: there is no difference in appearance on things, even if there is, examination is not a reason, summarizing and showing the meaning of establishment in that way. The first part is: if it is thought that the appearance of things, that is, not the mind that appears things, but the things themselves are generally some differences that change from not appearing before to appearing later, then, things, as the subject, have no differences that change from not appearing before to appearing later, because birth and destruction do not
