Establishing the Meaning of Direct Perception Establishing the Meaning of Direct Perception Secondly, establishing the meaning of direct perception has three aspects: truly explaining the entity and cause, explaining seeming direct perception for the sake of non-deception, and explaining the cause and effect of measuring what is to be measured. The first has two aspects: marginal examination and the meaning of the scripture. The first has two aspects: refuting what is unreasonable and explaining the way the scripture explains it. The first is: The former, oh son! "Direct perception is free from conceptualization," etc., up to "depending on that, eye consciousness arises," shows the general characteristic of direct perception. If direct perception generates wisdom, etc., it is unreasonable to individually show the four direct perceptions below, because in general, "Name and kind, etc., combined, free from conceptualization is direct perception." If the general characteristic is shown by direct perception, then it contradicts what is said in the scripture here, and if it is not shown, then "mind also with meaning," etc., the former is free from conceptualization, and the reason for its establishment is that it arises from meaning. Not only that, but mental direct perception also arises from meaning, therefore it is free from conceptualization. It has been determined in both the Commentary on Valid Cognition and the Treatise on Valid Cognition, because all direct perception does not arise from the apprehended meaning, and even if it arises from the apprehended meaning, direct perception arises from the apprehended meaning, and mental direct perception also arises from the apprehended meaning, because there is no connection between the two. The latter, the first verse here is the general characteristic of direct perception, "Gathering the mind from all," etc., below is connected to sense direct perception, saying that this is exactly the view of the Treatise on Valid Cognition. Those people have not distinguished the difference that the three chapters of direct perception, self-benefit, and other-benefit in the Treatise on Valid Cognition first have scriptures showing the general characteristics, but this place does not. If it is thought that the first verse here is the meaning of the direct perception of the Treatise on Valid Cognition, which is free from conceptualization and non-deceptive, etc., then it is clear without looking at the scriptures below, because in that, "After it has been established that the conceptualization of the combination of kind, etc., is free from conceptualization, or the root consciousness establishes freedom from conceptualization, it is direct perception itself, because for what reason? Gathering the mind from all," etc., because they have not seen what was said. Some people think these

Regarding the application to sensory perception, proving that sensory consciousness is free from conceptualization. This is done by dividing into two ways: refuting the view that it is conceptual. The first way includes: proving through direct perception, proving through inference, and refuting other proofs. The second way includes: refuting that meaning-combination is conceptual, refuting that sound-combination is conceptual, and the three cases of being too extreme if it is conceptual. However, this division is not the intention of the scripture, because there is no difference between proving freedom from conceptualization and refuting that it is conceptual. Furthermore, the former is refuting that name-combination is conceptual, and the latter is refuting that meaning-combination is conceptual, and neither case grasps the main point. Moreover, the view established through direct perception is also problematic, because the statement "all conceptual thoughts rely on names" (Tibetan: ཀུན་གྱི་རྣམ་རྟོག་མིང་རྟེན་ཅན།) should be applied to the case of being separate from name-combination concepts. Furthermore, the statement "arising from the cause of remembering signs" (Tibetan: བརྡ་དྲན་པ་ཡི་རྒྱུ་ཅན་གྱི།) separates meaning-combination concepts, and also contradicts the statement in the early commentary of the Pramāṇavārttika, "For things that are perceived as different, there is also attachment." The second point is that Dignāga said, "That which is combined with names and categories, etc., and is non-conceptual, is direct perception" (Tibetan: མིང་དང་རིགས་སོགས་སྦྱོར་བ་ཡི། །རྟོགས་པ་དང་བྲལ་མངོན་སུམ་མོ།). He explicitly stated the vow that sensory perception is free from conceptualization and implied the proof. Vasubandhu said, "Consciousness is also with meaning" (Tibetan: ཡིད་ཀྱང་དོན་དང་), he explicitly stated the proof for mental perception and implied the vow. Dharmakīrti combined these two, and in the case of sensory perception, he proved that it is free from conceptualization by arising from meaning, and by examining the concept to be separated, he proved that it is separate from name-combination concepts, and that it is separate from meaning-combination concepts. Therefore, in the Pramāṇavārttika, starting from explaining the definition of direct perception, the opposite meaning of the concept to be separated is determined. From this, in order to prove that sensory perception is separate from this, the proof of arising from meaning mentioned in the scripture is used. Then, the proofs for being separate from meaning-combination concepts and being separate from name-combination concepts are explained in order. Here, the order of these three is reversed, the first two are the order of the scripture, and the reason for mentioning arising from meaning at the end is to avoid disputes over the term sensory consciousness, it is necessary to mention the related content of arising from both the sense faculty and the object, and to understand a part of it, namely arising from meaning. In the past in Tibet, how this...
