Those very appearances are adhered to as external names, thereby establishing a connection between name and named. The former reasoning is established because the appearance of what clearly appears is absent at the time of establishing symbolic connection. The pervasion is established because in cognition, things are distinguished by different appearances. The second case is, if when symbolizing the past, future, and very distant places, etc., the self-character does not actually appear, so it is not directly symbolized, but when pointing to the form appearing to the eye consciousness and saying, "This is form," is the self-character directly connected to the symbol? Even though the image of form appears in the eye consciousness, when someone points and says, "This is form" to the listener, the actual object of the symbol pointed out by others, that dharma, as the subject, adheres to the appearance appearing in the conceptual thought, and that is what the sound directly connects to, not the self-character that becomes the object of cognition of the sense consciousness. If that were the case, in the state where the sense consciousness does not enter the object, merely by someone saying the word "form," the form should clearly appear, but in fact it does not appear that way. Name, as the subject, if it is not symbolized and connected with the named, it cannot understand its own meaning. If that were the case, even if the symbol has not been seen, merely by hearing it, it would lead to the fault of understanding its meaning. The third part is divided into two points: pointing out the cause of confusion, and refuting the argument. The first point is, if the rational person thinks that the mental conceptual thought that follows the sense organ itself is confused in the manner of appearance, thereby becoming the conceptual thought of sense appearance, then what is the cause of its confusion? The consciousness with conceptual thought and the sense consciousness without conceptual thought, these as the subject, foolish rational people will cling to and mistakenly think they are the same, and there is a reason for this, because they enter the same object simultaneously, such as form and sound, or even if they enter sequentially, they enter very quickly. Therefore, they cause the cause of confusion. The first cause of confusion is one's own view, and the second is conforming to the views of others. The second part is divided into two points: argument and answer. The first point is, if what is seen is non-conceptual, then multiple consciousnesses will not arise simultaneously, so it must arise in conjunction with conceptual thought. If that is the case,

The directly perceived object is a phenomenon. It should become discontinuous, that is, it should not appear as uninterrupted. If it is said that it is because it is interrupted by conceptual thoughts between its past and future. There are two parts: First, the discontinuity of seeing is the same for others. Second, refuting the answers of others who are not the same. The first is: Even if the root consciousness of the logicians of other schools is conceptual thought, when conceptualizing the past sound of different types from the present conceptual thought, the present eye consciousness that grasps form is a phenomenon. How can it not be discontinuous, it should become discontinuous. Because it is interrupted by the conceptual thought that grasps the past sound between its past and future. There are two parts: First, state the answers of others. Second, refute the analogy and meaning. The first is: If the object to be grasped is a conceptual thought of the seeing side, although there is interruption, it appears as uninterrupted, because it has power, and because it enters quickly. Like when a torch is quickly rotated, because it enters quickly, it is seen as the appearance of a wheel, if it is thought like that. There are two parts: First, refute the meaning. Second, refute the analogy. The first has four parts: First, quick entry is the same for others. Second, it should be that the senses enter simultaneously. Third, it should be that consciousness enters simultaneously. Fourth, dispel the controversy that both have. The first is: Although conceptual thoughts and non-conceptual thoughts arise alternately, the root direct perception phenomenon of other schools should appear as uninterrupted. Because quick entry is the same for you too. The second is: The ear consciousness that hears the letter sa ra should also hear the letters of its own object simultaneously, because it enters the letters of its own object quickly. If it is said that although they enter quickly, they are not heard as uninterrupted. In this tenet that does not allow many consciousnesses to arise simultaneously, the previous moment's attention simultaneously enters the six objects, and when the six senses such as the eye, which are all gathered simultaneously with the six objects such as form, exist simultaneously, the phenomenon should be that the six consciousnesses arise in sequence. What is the arising of the six consciousnesses? Because the six consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously. The thesis is accepted. If it is accepted, then at that time, although the eye consciousness that grasps form is interrupted by the other five consciousnesses that enter between the previous and subsequent moments, it is also a consciousness that appears as if it enters quickly without interruption. The ear consciousness that hears sa ra, that is, the consciousness that hears the last letter sa ra of the name, the previous moment.
