Then, it is not clear, yet it appears clearly, because it is a sense consciousness that sees meaning beyond ordinary senses by eliminating the defects of the autonomous sense. Third, this sense consciousness, dharma, the outline other than the lamp is not your actual cause, because other than the appearing sense and attention, what you actually produce is the understanding of the lamp's energy, not the understanding of the outline's energy. If you admit, then the appearance of the outline, dharma, how can it be the apprehended object of that sense consciousness? Because it is not the cause of that sense consciousness. Furthermore, if the outline itself is the objective cause of that wisdom sense consciousness, then, this sense consciousness, dharma, how can it depend on the objective condition, the lamp? Because the appearance of the outline is your objective cause. There is no fault, if you say that the combination of the lamp and the outline is the objective cause of that wisdom, then, this wisdom, dharma, the combination of the lamp and the outline is also not your objective cause, because even without the outline as the objective condition, you would exist merely by having the lamp with other conditions as the objective condition. Sixth, establishing from the three differences of near, far, and intermediate has three parts: stating the consequence, refuting the fault, and summarizing the conclusion. First, if the mind itself does not appear as the image of grasper and grasped, but external objects exist and appear as they are, then, for example, a pot, dharma, should not appear as clear and unclear, etc., in the sense consciousness due to the differences of the viewer being near or far, etc., because it remains in either a clear or unclear state. Second, it is divided into two: refuting the fault of having appearance differences, and refuting the fault of having functional differences. First, it is divided into three: refuting the fault of merely having appearance differences, refuting the difference between clear and unclear appearances, and asking for the reason for unclear appearances and refuting it. First, if you say that because the appearance difference between the object and the sense is different due to near and far, the same thing will appear as various things such as clear and unclear, then, the appearance difference between the object and the sense is that between the object and the sense being obstructed and not obstructed by obscurations.

What is it? If it is not determined, then for the same object, the two that are in proximity and distance are the subject of the thesis. It should be that the way of seeing that object is the same. Because the situation where that object is not determined by the obscuration is the same. If it is determined, then those two are the subject of the thesis. It should be that the situation of not seeing that object is the same. Because the situation where that object and one's own sense faculty are determined by the obscuration is the same. Second, if the appearance is clear when near, therefore all parts of the object are seen, and when far, the appearance is not clear, therefore some small parts of that object are not seen, therefore the appearance of clarity and unclearness is different for the same object at near and far, if you say so. Then, is the object to be seen an external object, or are they many atoms? If according to the first case, then the external object, such as a vase, is the subject of the thesis. When far away, the unerring sense consciousness sees some parts of you and does not see some parts, from what does this difference come? It should not be so. Because it is an indivisible one. If according to the second case, then that is the subject of the thesis. The unerring sense consciousness sees some parts of you and does not see some parts, from what does this difference come? It should not be so. Because you are many different subtle dust particles, located in the same place, either all are seen or all are not seen. Furthermore, if the difference between clear and unclear appearance causes the same object to appear differently in the minds of people near and far, then one such as a vase is the subject of the thesis. Other appearances are different, for what reason does it appear different to the unerring sense consciousness? It should not appear different. Because it is the same without difference. The thesis is admitted. Third, furthermore, for the same object, when viewed from afar, if the appearance is unclear, then when asked why the appearance of that object is unclear, what is the reason? If you answer, because it is obscured by dust, etc. Then ask in return, why is it not the case that dust, etc., obscure the appearance here nearby? If you answer, the dust, etc., are thin nearby, therefore they do not obscure. Then, when nearby, it is the subject of the thesis. Dust, etc., are able to obscure the appearance. Because the obscuring dust, etc., are thin, so too the appearance being obscured is also thin. If you say that there are many obscuring dust particles when far away, therefore they obscure the appearance, but it is not so when nearby. Then, the distance other than nearby is the subject of the thesis. Obscuring dust obscures the appearance.
