Fourth, if according to the Mind-Only school's view, it is unreasonable for the consciousness that lacks both grasper and grasped to give rise to the illusion of grasping onto grasper and grasped. This is because the cause for generating the illusion of grasping onto grasper and grasped—seeing something that is true and in accordance with the grasper and grasped—does not exist. For this practitioner, not even a single nature of true grasper and grasped is seen. This is pervasive. Generally, the arising of illusion is not without cause. Just as mistaking mica for silver, it is because one only sees the similarity and clings to something that is not the nature of that thing, that the illusion of worldly people arises, and this is pervasive. If someone says: The arising of illusion does not necessarily require seeing the similarity beforehand. This is not pervasive, because even without relying on seeing the similarity, this illusion can arise. Because the illusion of grasping onto grasper and grasped, which arises from being deluded by internal ignorance, is produced by internal faults, therefore its nature or essence is naturally inverted in appearance. For example, just as those with cataracts see illusions such as strands of hair. The second part has three points: Establishing self-awareness through experiencing the nature of the grasping aspect; applying the measure and result of self-awareness to all consciousnesses; and refuting views that contradict self-awareness being a valid measure. The first point is: Then, in the Mind-Only school's view that external objects are false, if the grasped aspect is false, then for this view, if self-awareness is nominally established, then what is the measure and result of the nature of self-awareness like? For those who believe that external objects are false, the mind itself is the subject. The grasping aspect that you completely eliminate is self-knowing, because the grasping aspect that you completely eliminate is its nature. Therefore, the grasping aspect is the subject, and self-awareness is its establisher, because it is capable of explaining self-awareness. The second point is: In the school that believes that external objects are false, when the nature of the mind itself is set as the object, the self becomes the measured object, and the grasping aspect that completely eliminates it becomes the measuring agent, which is the valid measure, and the self-awareness that experiences it abides in the result. This is the subject, and it should be applied to all consciousnesses, because the measure and result of the nature of self-awareness abide in it. For example, in the view of the Sutra school, when desire and so on are set as the measured object, the self-awareness that experiences it abides in the measure and result of direct perception. The same reasoning can be applied to the view of the Sutra school.
