If someone asks, "Regarding the consciousness that perceives objects, if analyzed, it is true that it does not grasp external objects. But if analyzed, grasping external objects, I also do not understand, because I do not wish it to be so." From "doing things" to here, it is because of recognizing the association with actions. Also, "Or self-awareness is the result." Also, "From its nature, things are determined." Also, the four valid cognitions and results shown by "the appearance of the object itself" should be understood as being explained in order. Fourth, even if it is a false appearance, the result of self-awareness can be established, which has two aspects: because of the false appearance, it is not self-awareness. When measuring oneself, the valid cognition and result of self-awareness are established. The first aspect has four points: even if there are no three—object of grasping, grasper, and consciousness—they still appear in illusion. For that appearance, establish the three—valid cognition, result, and measurement. Refute that the appearance itself is established as true. If there is no truth, then there is no illusion, which is to be avoided. The first point is: In the Compendium, it says, "When the appearance is what is measured, valid cognition and its result, are the grasping consciousness, because of that reason, those three should not be made different." This is to explain its meaning: if there is no external object, then how can the establishment of the three—valid cognition, result, and measurement—be possible? For the consciousness that perceives objects, the three—valid cognition, result, and measurement—are not different on the object, because your nature is one, and although the three—object of grasping, grasper, and consciousness—are not distinct, due to the illusion caused by ignorance, inverted beings will think that you have the aspect of the object of grasping, the aspect of the grasper, and the result of experience, as if they were distinct. For example, for the senses that are deluded by mantras, medicines, etc., lumps of clay and small pieces, etc., horses, cows, etc., are different from its shape, but from the lumps of clay, etc., horses, cows, etc., appear different from the lumps of clay, etc. If the horses and cows themselves are newly produced from mantras, etc., then those things like lumps of clay, etc., are not produced as horses, cows, etc., because eyes that are not deluded by mantras, etc., cannot see horses, cows, etc. For example, in a distant and vast, flat desert, even small things will appear large, but it is not that small things have become large. The second point is: For the one consciousness that perceives objects, it is not contradictory to establish the three—valid cognition, result, and measurement—in conventional terms, because you

The aspects of the apprehended, the aspects of the apprehender, and the aspects of self-awareness, although not actually different in meaning, the distinctions made for these three in sequence as the object to be measured, the measurer which is valid cognition, and abiding as the result, this is merely making distinctions as they appear in a confused consciousness, and is not a true distinction. The third part has two points: establishing the subject property, and stating the reason. The first is: In one mind, the appearance of the three, apprehender, apprehended, and awareness, as distinct is not true. If it were not so, but true, then the various aspects appearing in one mind, are they true as multiple or true as one? If according to the first, then the indivisible single entity of mind, as the subject, for you, the various aspects appearing as having various natures, how could they be true as multiple? Therefore, they are not true, because you are the nature of a single mind. If not pervasive, then mind, as the subject, you, being the single nature, would be lost and become multiple, because appearing as multiple is true as multiple. If according to the latter, then the various aspects appearing in one mind, as the subject, are not true as one, because they appear as multiple in an unconfused mind. If not pervasive, then happiness, suffering, and other different things, as the subject, would lose their respective otherness, because of non-pervasiveness. Furthermore, those aspects, as the subject, are not true as being of a single nature, because they are not seen as being of a single nature. This is pervasive, because if valid cognition sees things as undifferentiated, then it will necessarily be determined as undifferentiated, otherwise it will not be established as undifferentiated. The second point is: The entities of the aspects appearing in the consciousness of object appearance, as the subject, when analyzed by reasoning, then they do not exist as true entities at that time, because they do not have the nature of true one and many. These are the ways in which the non-reality of appearance establishes that the apprehended aspect appearing in the consciousness of object appearance is not truly existent through the method of false appearance. And, depending on this, the apprehender aspect and self-awareness are also established as not truly existent. The view that the apprehender aspect and self-awareness, which depend on the self-illuminating consciousness, are truly existent will be explained below. The distinction between true and false aspects is the unerring point that appears in the great treatises, and this alone is it. Seeking other than this will not go beyond the scope of error.
