It is considered to be functional. Any intellect, if analyzed, is because there is no cognition other than itself. Because the external objects of cognition have been blocked, therefore. Here, if the Mind-Only School analyzes the root consciousness arising from stable habituation and the root consciousness of unstable habituation, they are the same in self-awareness. Therefore, in their own nature, self-awareness is the same in being directly perceived. But in general, there is a difference in whether or not to admit that self-awareness is directly perceived, because the former is valid cognition and the latter is not. The way the former is considered valid cognition is also in conventional terms, in terms of not deceiving the object of engagement for those who seek meaning. At that time, it is believed that the basis of sense direct perception and self-awareness direct perception are the same. From the *Object Examination*, the three causes of sense direct perception occur in the Mind-Only School's own system, so sense direct perception is undeniably established. And since it is a direct perception without any other cognizable object, self-awareness direct perception is also undeniably established. If this is done, even if the Mind-Only School's doctrine admits the direct perception of sense consciousness and mental consciousness, the way to explain the scripture "Four direct perceptions are the Sutra School, the Vaibhashika says three, and Mind-Only two" as it is, seems to be used only by me these days. Second, there are three ways to prevent appearance from being an external object and thus establish self-awareness as the result: external objects appear real but there is no reason to establish them; appearance is an external object but there is a reason to hinder it; therefore, through these two ways, self-awareness is established. The first case is: if the Vaibhashika says, although there is no external object that creates the image hidden, but if consciousness truly experiences the appearing external object in its own time, what fault do you have to say that self-awareness is the result? We have no fault, but this is not the case, because the very statement that consciousness truly experiences the external object, what meaning does it express? Because there is no reason to establish it. The second case is: if you say that there is no reason to establish it, it is not established, because the mind is in the form of that object. The mind does have the image of following the object in its own time, but this image, as a dharma, are you the real external object, or an image arising from other habituation? This is to be analyzed.

This is logical, not an actual external existence, because the reasoning to be explained below will harm this. How does it harm? The phenomenon that appears as blue is the subject. What is seen is mind, not an independently existing external entity, because the characteristic of what is seen is that when the apprehending consciousness of blue is separated from the apprehended, you (what is seen) do not exist; if the apprehending consciousness of blue exists, you (what is seen) exist, that is to say, it is definitely determined simultaneously with the apprehending consciousness of blue. Here, Lhawang (ལྷ་དབང་, Devendra) says, "If the mind is of that form." This is presented from the perspective of the Sutra School, and the Tibetans follow it, which is a failure to bring out the teaching ability of the upper and lower treatises, because the former establishes self-awareness as the result by negating the external object that creates the image; the latter establishes self-awareness as the result by negating that the image itself is the external object, showing different occasions for each. Otherwise, the occasion of establishing self-awareness after negating the external object would become redundant. Then, since the Vaibhashika School does not admit that the image of the external object appears in the mind, how should "If the mind is of that form" be applied? It is not that they completely deny the image, because they believe that all minds and mental factors have images. This is not different from the Sutra School, because for the knowledge that manifests the external object, the Sutra School believes that the image of the manifested external object is the nature of knowledge, while the Vaibhashika School believes that it is the nature of the external object. Therefore, establishing two modes here is also establishing two modes that become the nature of one consciousness, and it should be known that it is not merely establishing two modes. Do not follow the rabbit's tracks, but organize the upper and lower relationships of the great treatises and contemplate. If it is said that by the sign of the result, that is, the consciousness that sometimes reverses, can the cause, that is, the existence of the external object, be established? The consciousness that appears as fire is the subject. Whether it arises or not depends on whether the former that awakens its own habit exists or not, not on the external fire, because in the context of the Mind-Only School, some previous entering consciousnesses strongly awaken the habits of some later entering consciousnesses. Third, because there is no independent external object. For a single knowledge that manifests an external object, it is the subject, there is an appearance of two modes of grasper and grasped, defiled by ignorance, because it itself appears as two modes.
