If you say that it is because it is not considered the immediate cause of pleasure, etc. Pleasure and pain, the two, are the subject. By what is it known that the consciousness is the immediate cause of your taking, or is it not? Because you are an inanimate object that does not know. If the consciousness is not the immediate cause of pleasure, etc., it also becomes the dominant condition. One dominant condition cannot simultaneously produce contradictory self-results, so the two, pleasure and pain, cannot arise simultaneously. If you say that the dominant condition is the subject. It is not impossible for you alone to produce two contradictory self-results simultaneously, because you see the ability of one to produce contradictory self-results simultaneously. For example, the light of appearance, one ray of the sun, for the eye faculty of the owl that walks at night, and for the eye faculties of other humans, etc., in sequence, it is both the unfavorable condition for seeing form and not seeing form, and the favorable condition, just like this. Third, it is shown to be the very nature of knowing other objects. It is unreasonable for pleasure, etc., to be experienced by other consciousnesses that are the same time or not the same time as itself, therefore it is established as self-cognizance. Pleasure, etc., are the subject. It also knows other objects, because what appears is the aspect of the object that has been transferred to oneself. Therefore, these pleasures, etc., which have become the nature of self-knowing, are the subject. It is only that they arise from external objects with their aspects, but they do not actually experience external objects, because they actually experience the aspect of the object, so in the world, it is only the name of experiencing the object that is established. Therefore, pleasure, etc., are the subject. It is said that experiencing the aspect of the object is experiencing the object, because the nature of the object, the aspect given from oneself, is experienced by the very nature of those consciousnesses. Pleasure, etc., are the subject. The name of your object of focus is reasonable, because the aspect given by the object appears. Second, refuting that pleasure, etc., are external inanimate objects, there are two parts: stating the assertion, and refuting it. First, some called Samkhyas say that pleasure, etc., exist in external objects as merely the nature of the five, such as form, and are mindless.

They say that pleasure and consciousness are grasped by other things, and are not self-aware. The second part has three aspects: refuting that pleasure, etc., are grasped by other things; refuting that pleasure, etc., are external; refuting that pleasure, etc., are mindless. The first point is: According to another view of the Samkhya school, the sense consciousness that holds the five elements simultaneously should not hold both form, etc., and pleasure, etc., as objects of grasping, because form, etc., must only be the object of the five elements. The second part has three aspects: refuting with the sign of being apparent but unobserved; refuting with the reasoning of being too extreme; refuting the indirect defense of that fault. The first point is: If blue, etc., are the nature of the five elements, and are held simultaneously with pleasure, etc., because they are the same as pleasure, etc., then blue, etc., and pleasure, etc., as the subject, how can they not be different? They should be different, because the mind that appears as different is not confused, therefore they should be regarded as different. The second point is: For many observers, as the subject, for external things, there is a difference in the intermediate state of wanting or not wanting, and even for the same thing, due to the difference in habit of wanting or not wanting, the difference between happiness and complete suffering will not arise in their respective minds, because the pleasure, etc., that you experience is the same external thing that exists in the essence of happiness or suffering. The third point is: If the external pleasure, etc., does not have a special feature that transcends habit, but the external five elements are like pleasure, etc., and the mind is also the nature of pleasure, etc., therefore it is not contradictory that they give rise to the difference between happiness and suffering, then this is not the case, because how can the external five elements be understood as the nature of pleasure, etc.? They should not be the nature of pleasure, etc., because the difference between giving rise to happiness and suffering is only the pleasure, etc., of the mind. If external things are also the subject, are pleasure, etc., because they are the object of grasping of the mind or the Great自在天 (Tibetan: ཆེན་པོ།, Sanskrit: Maheśvara, literal meaning: Great Lord) who has the nature of pleasure, etc., this is universal, because different kinds are not the grasper and the grasped, then, as the subject, the person of self-awareness will not become the grasper of all objects, because all objects are material.
