Is it known by the sense consciousness that arises simultaneously with oneself, or by the later-arisen mind consciousness? According to the first view, since objects such as form are close, the sense consciousness in which the mind consciousness and pleasure etc. arise is the subject. How can you cognize pleasure etc. if you abandon your own object, form etc.? You cannot. Because you grasp your own object, form etc., as the object of apprehension. The second view is: if the sense consciousness first grasps the object, and then the mind consciousness grasps pleasure etc., so that the objects and pleasure etc. of these two consciousnesses are grasped alternately, then the consciousness that experiences pleasure etc. is the subject. Pleasure etc. will not appear to the experiencer as uninterrupted, because the experience of pleasure etc. is interrupted by the grasping of form etc. before and after. Similarly, this should also be applied to the grasping of form etc. If it is said that although the experience of pleasure etc. is interrupted, it appears uninterrupted because it is fast, then the consciousness that grasps form etc. is also the subject. Why should form etc. not appear uninterrupted without experiencing pleasure etc.? It should. Because the speed is the same. The third view is: the consciousness of the senses grasps objects such as form and pleasure etc. that are simultaneous with itself together, then the unerring mind of the senses is the subject. It is not established that you alone know objects such as form and pleasure etc. that are simultaneous with yourself as objects of apprehension together, because if your object of apprehension is form etc., then it must be form etc. And, at the time of your arising, pleasure etc. do not have such a capacity, because pleasure etc. that are simultaneous with yourself are not your cause, even if they are not your cause, you arise from objects such as form. If it is said that a collection of blue etc. can produce eye consciousness, but each of blue etc. does not have the capacity to produce eye consciousness, similarly, both form etc. and pleasure etc. can produce sense consciousness, but it is not contradictory that each of the two can also produce sense consciousness, then the sense consciousness is the subject. Sometimes it will only grasp pleasure etc., because pleasure etc. alone can be your object of apprehension. For example, sometimes blue

Just as a single blue color is apprehended by sense consciousness alone. It is not possible to think so, because if the objects of the causes of happiness and so on, such as form, are not apprehended by sense consciousness, then it is not reasonable to experience happiness and so on. If sense consciousness does not apprehend happiness and so on alone, but also apprehends happiness and so on together with objects such as form, then, the wisdom of sense consciousness, what ability do happiness and so on have to be your object of apprehension? It should not exist, because you do not want happiness and so on to produce you as an object of apprehension. Fourth, if there are no objects at all, but the wisdom of the senses, such as the eyes, experiences happiness and so on, then, the eye consciousness will never be able to apprehend the basis of happiness and so on, such as form, and the differences of women and so on, because it only apprehends happiness and so on as the object of apprehension. This is pervasive, because the internal parts, happiness and so on, exist in the things that can produce sense consciousness, and if sense consciousness apprehends it, then sense consciousness will not be able to see the outside. Fifth, if sense consciousness only apprehends objects, such as form, then, that person with sense consciousness will not be able to experience the happiness and so on that arises from that object, because there is only one consciousness in your continuum, and it only apprehends objects. Second, if from the existence of objects such as form, and happiness and so on, both the sense consciousness that apprehends form and so on, and the mind that experiences happiness and so on, arise simultaneously, then, when two things, wanting and not wanting, exist simultaneously, in the continuum of one person, happiness and suffering will be known or experienced simultaneously, because wanting and not wanting things exist simultaneously. If only two objects exist, happiness and suffering will not arise, but rather, the consciousness that is the immediate cause of happiness and suffering, also exists with the object and the aggregate, then suffering and so on and happiness will arise, therefore happiness and suffering will not arise simultaneously, because there is only one consciousness, and that one cannot simultaneously produce the two contradictory things of happiness and suffering.
