Because everything pervades that which is produced by itself and exists prior to it. If cause and effect are simultaneous, is it simultaneous when the cause is not yet produced, or is it simultaneous when it is produced? If it is like the first case, then when the cause is not yet produced, the subject of debate, cause and effect are not simultaneous, because the cause does not have the ability to produce the effect, because the cause itself does not exist. If it is like the second case, then when the cause is produced later, the subject of debate, cause and effect are not simultaneous, because the cause does not provide close assistance in producing the effect, because the effect has already been established. The thesis is accepted. The third case is, the object apprehended by mental direct perception, the subject of debate, how does mental direct perception apprehend and not apprehend? If it is said that it is because it is different in time from mental direct perception, then, the Mind-Only school that knows reasoning, the subject of debate, knows how to establish the apprehended and the apprehending even though the times are different, because for that consciousness, it can truly establish the aspect of its own kind, and for the cause itself, even if the times are not the same, it knows and accepts that it is the object of that consciousness. Therefore, even if mental direct perception has many causes, the cause that generates the aspect, the subject of debate, its nature, that is, that aspect, is established on the resultant mental direct perception, and it is said in the world that the resultant mental direct perception also apprehends it, because the resultant mental direct perception arises following your aspect. Third, establishing the experienced consciousness, explaining self-cognizance as direct perception, there are two aspects: the general framework and the meaning of the text. First, in general, considering that all consciousnesses are self-cognizant when they turn inward, therefore, self-cognizance is explained as direct perception with respect to one's own nature. The meaning of being self-cognizant when turning inward is not that the experienced object arises first and then turns inward, because if that were the case, it would become a memory consciousness of remembering the past. Therefore, the reason why all consciousnesses arise as merely experiencing, or merely knowing, or merely being clear when they arise is that later, the memory arises saying that my consciousness has become like this, therefore, the key to establishing self-experience or self-cognizance by the sign of memory also lies in the fact that when oneself arises, it is not knowing in the manner of object and subject, but rather arising in the nature of merely experiencing oneself, and this is self-cognizance.

The establishment is just like this. When one is born, if one is born in the nature of experience or awareness, then that itself establishes self-awareness, intending this, it is said in the Sutra on Valid Cognition: Attachment, etc., self-awareness is without conceptualization. Also, conceptualization is also considered as self-awareness, but it is not in reality, because it is conceptualization. Thus, it is said on attachment, etc., which are difficult to determine as self-awareness, and on conceptualization. Intending that this pervades all knowledge, the great master Sakya Pandita also said: Self-awareness is just a small part of matter. So on and so forth. In this treatise, the reason for explaining on the basis of the established subject, such as happiness, etc., is to refute the wrong conceptualization of the Vaibhashikas who consider happiness, etc., as internal matter, and the Samkhyas who consider happiness, etc., as external matter. The second has two parts: establishing the experiencer as being free from conceptualization, and refuting that the experienced is matter. The first is: the nature of happiness, etc., the subject, your self-awareness of experiencing them is not a conceptualization that holds the name and meaning of that expression in a sequential relationship, that is, mixed together, because you are not actually able to express it, because you do not rely on following others in the object. The second has two parts: refuting that happiness, etc., are internal matter, and refuting that happiness, etc., are external matter. The first has two parts: stating the assertion, and refuting it. The first is: happiness, etc., those, the subject, how do they know their own nature, that is, they should not know, because other external objects are also not knowers, because the internal meaning is matter. Therefore, it should be known by another entity, a consciousness that relies on one meaning, as some, that is, the Vaibhashikas, say. The second has three parts: establishing that happiness, etc., are knowledge, refuting that they are experienced by other consciousnesses, and showing that different objects are both knowers. The first has three parts: showing pervasion and establishing the reason, establishing the similarity of the three conditions, and refuting the debate on the similarity of the three conditions. The first is: happiness, etc., of the retinue of sense consciousness, that, the subject, is it not knowledge, it should be, because it is born from the three conditions that are not other than the cause of sense consciousness. Pervasion: the same result and the same, all the different natures in order
