Because the general cow as an entity is not seen, other than the sound of that cow, that is, the name, color, and shape, etc., there is no other general appearance. Eighth, that general, as a phenomenon, cannot merely perform the function of generating self-grasping consciousness, because it does not appear independently from self-grasping consciousness. Therefore, the general, as a phenomenon, is established as not having the nature of a thing, because it cannot perform a function. This is pervasive, because being empty of the ability to perform a function is the characteristic of non-existence. Second, establishing a thing as its own characteristic: whatever is a thing is considered its own characteristic, because it is the opposite of what was said earlier about the object expressed by the thing of sound, etc. Here, saying that the self-characteristic is established as a thing is merely connecting words without understanding the previous ability. Third, showing the divisions of the general characteristic is divided into two: things and refuting disputes. First, if the general does not exist in things, then will there also be no divisions? Answer: That general, as a phenomenon, has three types: such as the general of living beings, which depends on things; such as the general of non-living beings, which depends on non-things; and such as the general of knowable objects, which depends on both. Here and in the first chapter, it is said that there are three types of general, because the establishment of the general is from the aspect of the form of conception clinging to that thing, so the name of the general that depends on both is mentioned. And when distinguishing others, the other of things and the other of non-things are distinguished, which is established from the aspect of distinguishing different kinds, so it is considered that the different kinds to be distinguished are determined as two types: things and non-things. The second is divided into two: dispute and answer. First, if the conception that grasps the general that depends on things, then it should be known by appearing the self-characteristic of the thing, because it is a knowledge that is related to the going and coming of the self-characteristic of the thing. Second, it is not known by appearing the self-characteristic, because it has already been answered in the case of saying "your appearing object is a thing, and the expression itself is the reason," and for the conception that grasps past and future things, the relation to the self-characteristic of the thing is different.

Because the reason is not established due to not seeing. If the generality of things is the nature of things, then it will be lost, because the conceptual thought that grasps things is not actually related to things. If you say so, the generality of things, as the subject, you do not have the fault of becoming the dharma of things, because the conceptual mind that is preceded by the direct perception that grasps things such as form is the consciousness that grasps you. Second, the object of entry is to collect the measured self-character into one: Then, is it certain that the measured object is divided into self-character and general character in terms of essence? From the way of entering, it is divided into self-character and general character, and the nature of self-character is the measured object that has become the object of the entry and exit of the universally named valid cognition, because the meaning of judging the existence or non-existence of the entry and exit of the definite knowledge led by it is only established by the self-character. Moreover, the self-character of external things is the object of perception when measured by direct perception, and the object of attachment when measured by inference. Both are established as the object of entry because they are not deceptive when a person enters. When measured by inference, the part that is confused by the nature of the external object is established as the general character in its own form. Therefore, if you understand the key point of speculation that the self-character itself is divided into self-character and general character from the way of entering, then there is no need for other question-and-answer at this time. Third, there are three aspects to refuting the two statements that contradict this: Divide into two from the way of understanding; show that the second way of understanding is wrong; refute the non-valid cognition of it. First: If self-character is the only measurable object, then it contradicts Dignāga's statement that "two natures are measurable objects." If you say so, Dignāga, as the subject, does not think that the measurable object is divided into self-character and general character in terms of essence, because self-character is understood by the nature of direct perception itself, and inference is understood by the nature of other general characters. Therefore, it is thought that the measurable object is two from the way of entering. Second: The second way of understanding, inference, as the subject, is considered to be wrong, because it does not directly grasp the object of self-character as it is, but grasps its own form as the object. The third is divided into two: state the view, explain the refutation.
