Explanation of the Intermediate Chapter. Explanation of the Intermediate Chapter. The second part has two aspects: marginal examination and the meaning of the text itself. The first is: In the commentary of the gods, four kinds of inverted distinctions are seen regarding treatises on valid cognition and its definition. That is to say, inverted distinctions regarding number, inverted distinctions regarding definition, inverted distinctions regarding scope, and inverted distinctions regarding result. Regarding the meaning of what is said, some earlier scholars argue that it is unreasonable to refute the inverted distinctions regarding number and scope by associating scope only with the first. If that were the case, it should also appear in the commentary before the inverted distinction regarding definition, because that is inevitable. Furthermore, in the old commentary of "Apart from Direct Perception Distinctions," it contradicts the statement that "Thus, after refuting the inverted distinction regarding number, refuting the inverted distinction regarding essence." Some argue that it is also unreasonable to divide it into four parts according to the literal meaning and refute the inverted distinction regarding scope by "Accumulators are collections," etc. Because the difference between using half of the text of the root direct perception to refute the inverted distinction regarding definition, and using that half and the remaining three direct perceptions to refute the inverted distinction regarding scope through the text, cannot be proven by anyone. Therefore, the intention of the gods is to consider the refutation of the inverted distinction regarding scope as a commonality of the first two (number and definition), and therefore it is said to be the third. That is, in the chapter on number, it is determined that what is to be measured is two, and other numbers are prevented; in the chapter on definition, in the chapter on root direct perception, it is prevented that collections, universals, and many opposites are the objects of root direct perception; in the chapter on mental direct perception, it is prevented that the apprehended meaning of the immediately preceding cause root direct perception is the object of mental direct perception; in the chapter on self-awareness, it is prevented that happiness, etc., are inanimate objects; in the chapter on yogic direct perception, it is prevented that untrue meanings are the objects of yogic direct perception, etc., all of which are because of refuting the inverted distinction regarding scope. However, in the "Treasury of Reasoning," it is considered that all the texts in the chapter on determining the number as two are the common dharma of the totality of valid cognition, so it is good to discuss it in the chapter on examining definitions, so it will be explained according to its method. The second part has two aspects: valid cognition.

It shows the common characteristics of the two. Determine the meaning of manifestation to be expressed at the moment. The first part is divided into two points: establishing that valid cognition is of two types; refuting the wrong view that there are other numbers. The first part is divided into three points: listing the arguments for determining it as two; establishing the three aspects of the argument; showing that these three aspects eliminate other numbers. The first part is, in general, the sutra says: "Direct perception and inference are valid cognitions, the two measure characteristics." Explaining this meaning, the valid cognition with characteristics mentioned earlier, as a subject, is determined as two types, direct perception and inference, from the perspective of the way of entering, because the number of objects to be measured in the way of entering is fixed in terms of self-character and general character. The second part is divided into two points: establishing the subject-property and establishing pervasion. The first part is divided into two points: listing the arguments for determining the object to be measured as two; explaining the nature of the subject and the object to be measured. The first part is: if it cannot be determined that the object to be measured is two, because there are also blue lotuses, etc., that are both self-character and general character. Then, the object to be measured in the way of entering valid cognition, as a subject, is two and not three, because the ability to function and the inability to function are fixed in number. If the hair and double moon, etc., that appear when the sense consciousness is confused, become objects to be measured that are neither self-character nor general character, because they cannot function, they are not self-character, and because they appear clearly but have no accompaniment, they are not general character either. Then, the hair and double moon, etc., that appear when the sense consciousness is confused, as a subject, are not the meaning of the object measured by the sense consciousness that appears, because for the meaning of the object measured by the sense consciousness that appears, there is no desire to agree with the definite understanding brought about by the sense consciousness. Therefore, the object to be measured in the way of entering valid cognition, as a subject, is fixed in number in terms of self-character and general character, because the same, i.e., common, and the different, i.e., uncommon, in terms of place, time, and nature, are determined as the two; and because it is the real object of sound and not the real object, it is determined as the two; and because other reasons besides the place, such as attention and holding names, etc., when they exist, the mind is the object of appearance of existence, and when holding names, etc., exist but the meaning of the object of appearance does not exist, it is the object of appearance of the non-existent consciousness, so the number is determined as the two. The second part is divided into three points: from the perspective of the way of entering, the object to be measured is two.
