Therefore, we call what can function as real. The second point is, if what can function should not be the basis of self-character, and what cannot function should not be the basis of general character, because both self and general have the ability to function truly. If you say so, then the definition of general character is not helpful to the consciousness that holds the general character, because it is not seen that the consciousness that holds the general character follows your advance and retreat. What is it like that it is not seen? Just like after the eye, color, and attention, it is not seen that the eye consciousness functions. The reason that the holding of general character is not born from the general character is that there are other necessities, such as the object with parts established by the Vaisheshika school, such as a pot, and the establishment, that is, action, and the general character of the pot itself, and the numbers such as two and three, and the differences of etc., and the collection, that is, the consciousness that holds the six meanings of words, is not born from objects etc., because it is said that it does not follow after objects etc. From what is it born? The conceptual mind that holds objects etc. has a cause, because it follows only the internal parts such as the memory of knowing the sign and the function of the mind. The third part has four points: rejecting that hair etc. are general characters, rejecting that it is the same as non-things, explaining how the appearance of hair transforms into self and general, and rejecting the debate on self-character itself. The first point is, if what cannot function in reality is a general character, then the hair etc. that appear in the mistaken sense consciousness should also become general characters. The hair etc. that appear in the mistaken sense consciousness are not general characters, because the consciousness that appears does not name them by clinging to them as real. The second point is, then non-things should also not become general characters, because they do not cling to them as real. For non-things, there will be no fault of becoming not general characters, because they are established as general characters through the way of conceptual mind holding them as knowable. The third point is, then hair should also become a general character, because conceptual mind clings to them as knowable. The appearance object of the conceptual mind that holds other hairs etc. as such objects of other consciousnesses of hair etc., there is no prohibition of being a general character, because

Because it is the appearing object of confusion. For the confused sense consciousness, the appearance of hair and so on clearly appearing, dharma, is a self-character, because it is the meaning of the essence of consciousness. For the subsequent conceptual thoughts that examine things called hair and so on, dharma, your appearing object is not a self-character, because you are a conceptual thought with a common object of experience. The sense consciousness that appears as hair, dharma, your object of apprehension is neither a self-character nor a common character, because you are without an object of apprehension. Fourth, if the common character is the appearance that appears to conceptual thought, dharma, it will become a fault of being a self-character, because it is the meaning of the essence of consciousness. If you say so, the Sautrantika, dharma, there is no fault of the appearance that appears to conceptual thought becoming a self-character, because it is accepted that the appearance that appears to conceptual thought is a self-character. Then, how is the common character established? The appearance of a pot and so on that appears to conceptual thought, dharma, the aspect of adhering to the nature of an external object is established as a common character, because the aspect of adhering to the nature of an external object is the same in the face of conceptual thought for all clear appearances of a pot, and in the face of conceptual thought it relies on being different from what is not a pot. Second, the explanation of whether or not a characteristic exists in a thing is divided into two: Establishing that a common characteristic does not exist in a thing. Establishing that a thing is itself a self-character. The first part has eight: Establishing it as the actual object expressed by sound. Establishing it as unspeakable as that which is other. Establishing the similarity of the way of perceiving and appearing of destruction. Establishing it as a common character of identical differences. Establishing it after distinguishing whether or not it is a result. Establishing it as the appearing object of the consciousness of verbal recollection. Establishing it as the consciousness without independent apprehension. Establishing it with the sign of being empty of definite functional capacity. The first part has two: Establishing the reason and establishing pervasion. Establishing pervasion itself and refuting controversy. First: The common character of a pot and so on, dharma, is not a thing, because it is the actual object expressed by sound. If it is not pervasive, then the self-character, dharma, you are known from appearance, the sense consciousness will become meaningless, because you are actually known from sound. It cannot be accepted like this, because the three causes such as the senses are not a result, that is, not having a necessity, when the self-character appears
