Firstly, inference such as inferring fire from smoke and trees from animal tracks is the subject of debate. It is indeed a valid means of knowledge (pramana) because it is a non-deceptive cognition. Secondly, there are two aspects: debate and response. Firstly, if some reasons that possess the three characteristics (tsul-sum) are not deceptive, but some reasons that possess the three characteristics are unreliable, then the mind that relies on them is not non-deceptive. For example, in some cases, deception is seen in reasons such as inferring a blue-headed person from the son of Devadatta. Secondly, there are two aspects: if there is deception, then it is not a correct reason; a correct sign has no deception. Firstly, proponent of other schools of thought, you consider a false sign that does not possess the three characteristics to possess the three characteristics. The sign that does not possess the three characteristics is seen as such a deception, but the sign that does not possess the three characteristics is not a correct reason, because even if you consider the sign that does not possess the three characteristics to possess the three characteristics, in reality, it does not possess the three characteristics. Secondly, there are two aspects: the sign of establishment has no deception; the sign of refutation has no deception. Firstly, like smoke and animal tracks, from which, at some time, the cognition of fire and trees is established on some objects that are the subject of debate, that smoke and animal tracks are the subject of debate. Your assertion that it is impossible for them to be without their cause—fire, or without their own nature—trees, is not possible, because they arise from you, or are undoubtedly the nature of trees. Other reasons that possess the three characteristics are also impossible to deceive, because the result and the pervaded are established as having a natural connection with the cause and the pervader. Whatever is seen as non-deceptive is itself the characteristic that establishes other reasons that possess the three characteristics as non-deceptive, because that is the establisher. Secondly, if it exists, then if the nature of the animal track—trees, or the cause of the smoke—fire, the cause of seeing these—other senses, etc., exist as the basis, and the nature and cause do not appear, then how can the animal track that possesses nature and cause, and the result—smoke, exist on that basis? Because the nature of that basis—trees, and the cause—fire, have been refuted by valid cognition. Thirdly, if the general mind—inference, is not a valid means of knowledge, and only direct perception is a valid means of knowledge, then what is seen on this side is hidden from oneself.

Therefore, it necessarily follows that all hidden things cannot be obtained. Because you do not now prove all hidden things through your own direct perception. For example, like objects of other worlds. If someone says that because one can understand things hidden from oneself at other times through one's sensory direct perceptions, there is no fault of lacking those things. Then, the sensory direct perception of ordinary people is the subject. It is not reasonable that you understand all hidden things at other times, because it is impossible for you to enter into the senses being tangible objects, and the ability of causes to produce effects, etc. If someone says that it is precisely because of this that one understands that those things do not exist. Then, sensory consciousness and the arising of effects will become causeless. Because the senses are tangible objects, and causes do not have the ability to produce effects. Fourth, direct perception alone is not a valid cognition, but valid cognition is established as both direct and inferential. Since non-conceptual consciousness enters into the manifest characteristic of the self-character, direct perception enters as a measure for the manifest characteristic of the self-character. Since non-conceptual consciousness is not an apprehender of universals, inference itself enters as a measure for that universal. Second, refuting wrong conceptions on the side of the majority has two parts: stating the two wrong conceptions together, and explaining the refuting reasons separately. The first has three parts: apprehending mixtures becomes another valid cognition, seeing distinctions becomes another valid cognition, therefore one cannot eliminate other numbers from the two. First, the logician says: Valid cognition is the subject. Color will not be understood as impermanent, because what is to be measured is determined as both self-characteristic and universal. This is pervasion. Because color is a self-characteristic and impermanence is a universal characteristic, color impermanence is a mixture of self-characteristic and universal. Therefore, the consciousness that understands color impermanence is the subject. It will become another valid cognition other than the two valid cognitions, because it is not direct perception since it is a universal characteristic, and it exists without relying on a sign, so it is not inference either. Because it is a valid cognition. Second, the reasoner says: Previously, fire was directly perceived inside the room. Later, from the sign of smoke behind the room, apprehending that the fire previously seen directly is this one, is seeing the distinction of the previous fire.
