If someone asks, by what valid cognition is it established that multiple moments do not arise simultaneously? If the answer is, because multiple minds are not seen simultaneously. Then, the very fact that multiple minds are not seen simultaneously is itself a subject. It cannot be the reason for the non-existence of multiple minds simultaneously, because there may be an obstruction, just as one may not see an obstruction even though it exists. One should analyze in this way: even if multiple minds arise simultaneously, they may not be seen due to obstruction. Furthermore, if someone asks whether the statement in the scriptures, "Two minds cannot arise simultaneously because there is no space," contradicts the simultaneous arising of multiple minds, then that scripture itself is a subject. The non-arising of multiple minds simultaneously is not your view, because your view is that these minds are of the same type, and each preceding moment of mind necessarily has the power to generate each succeeding moment of mind. Two minds of the same type do not arise simultaneously, because we clearly recognize that various conceptual thoughts arise sequentially, not simultaneously. Similarly, sense consciousnesses also do not arise simultaneously in multiple instances of the same type. The third point is that this demonstration that multiple sense consciousnesses of the same type do not arise simultaneously is itself a subject. For those who believe that upon seeing something in direct perception, they recognize it through conceptual thought as "This is it," this actually negates conceptual thought in sense direct perception, because the argument has shown that two sense direct perceptions of the same type do not arise simultaneously in the same continuum. Other reasons can also refute this view, such as the regrowth of cut hair, the different eggs produced by illusion, and the later moment of a lamp flame, etc. For those who believe that different conceptual thoughts arise from the previous hair and so on, this itself is a subject. You assert that the mind that recognizes "This is it" is also a direct perception, because you believe it is something that appears clearly. If you accept this premise and accept this conclusion, then that mind itself is a subject. How can it be said to be direct perception? Because it is not direct perception. Because clinging to the idea that the previous and the later are the same thing is a delusion. Therefore, from the perspective of the recognizing mind, there is no direct perception that definitively identifies letters, shapes, and so on as the same, because it is a delusion. Through these arguments, it is negated that it is not direct perception, thereby negating that it is sense consciousness.

What is it? The recognition that "that of before is this," is also a phenomenon. How is it that what arises from the sense faculty is sense consciousness, or is it not? From remembering what was previously experienced, you do not exist without attributing some qualities of that previous object to the later object. You are the one who attributes the qualities of the previous object to the later phenomenon, therefore. Second, there are three refutations of the simultaneous arising of the object of experience and the experiencer: contradiction of what is asserted, contradiction of reason, and the same applies to sequential arising. First: The mind that grasps forms, etc., is proven to be experienced by another mind that is simultaneous with it. When you refute the simultaneous arising of consciousness, at that time, the mind that knows the object and the mind that knows that are asserted to arise simultaneously. If so, then, the investigator, phenomenon, the mind that perceives forms, etc., is not reasonable to be experienced by another mind that is simultaneous with itself, because it is not desired that the experience of the object and the mind that experiences that arise simultaneously, that is, because you have asserted that the power of the mind is definite. Second: The person who sees the object, phenomenon, it should follow that the appearance of the object in the knowledge of the object and the appearance of the knowledge that experiences the knowledge of the object in the knowledge that grasps the object, these two different entities are cognized separately, because the knowledge of the object and the experiencer of that are two different entities that exist simultaneously. It is not possible to assert this, because that cognition also does not exist. That same explanation is that the person who sees the object, phenomenon, it should follow that the appearance of the knowledge that experiences the knowledge of the object as the consciousness that appears as the object and the appearance of the knowledge of the object as merely the external object are two different entities that exist simultaneously, because of the same reason as before. It is not possible to assert this, because that is not perceived. If it is said that although those two appearances are different, nevertheless, because one mind that is of the same type of cognition grasps those two knowledges as being of the same type, therefore there is such an attachment, then, the knowledge of the object and the mind that knows that, phenomenon, are not grasped as being of the same type by a mind that is of the same type, because if they were, it would follow that you do not exist as different entities. Furthermore, if the appearance of the knowledge of the object and the appearance of the knowledge that knows the object are cognized as being different at the time of experiencing, then it is possible to remember them as being different.
