Although, comparatively, there are some subtle differences between you, through which you can later be distinguished as "this is grasping form" and "this is grasping sound," it is impossible for a memory-consciousness to arise that can differentiate them. Because your differences are not clear, and the different aspects of your respective objects do not appear. For example, just as twins, etc., have subtle differences, but because these differences are not clearly seen, they are mistaken for one. Here, the "aspect of the object" must be understood as the aspect of the object that has transformed into the essence of consciousness. Second, explaining the reasoning for establishing self-awareness, there are three: establishing self-awareness with the reasoning of the sutras previously explained; establishing self-awareness with the reasoning of the treatise authors; and again establishing self-awareness with the reasoning of the sutras. First: The reasoning that establishes the two aspects spoken by the teacher also incidentally establishes self-awareness, because when the apprehended aspect of the mind itself appearing as an object is established, the experiencer is established as its own nature. Second, there are four: establishing by experiencing the apprehended aspect of one's own essence; establishing by analyzing the clear appearance of white, etc.; establishing by negating that it is not manifest self-mind; establishing by negating that it is experienced by another experiencer. The first has two: stating the thesis and refuting the answers of others. First: When the knowledge that has become its own essence, appearing as the two aspects of the object, is established, then self-awareness is established, because the thing to be experienced is established as the very essence of knowledge. The second has three: showing that there is no experience because the object of experience has ceased; if there is no self-experience, it contradicts the very nature of direct perception; the fault of entailing that other objects are not experienced. First: If the mind is established as having two aspects, but cannot be established as self-awareness, because the previous mind is not experienced by itself, but is experienced by the subsequent mind that manifests its aspect, then how does the subsequent mind, which has the aspect, experience the previous mind? Because the previous mind has ceased to exist at your time. The subsequent mind would cause all experiences to disappear, that is, nothing knowable could be known, because it has no own essence or experience. Second: For the mind that grasps forms, etc.

The consciousness that is the holder, that is, the experiencer, has the property. It should appear as the aspect of what is to be grasped. Because it is the consciousness that holds objects other than its own object. For example, sense consciousnesses and so on that have the appearance of appearing as the aspect of other objects such as form, etc., that is because they hold objects other than their own object, and they appear outwardly, that is, as pervading the appearance of what is to be grasped. It cannot be admitted, because self-awareness sees that it always appears inwardly to me, that is, to its own object of realization, and proceeds with the aspect of holding. The third has two parts: the statement of the thesis and the refutation of objections. The first is: whatever consciousness appears as an object, such as blue, etc., has the property. It should not experience that object. Because it does not experience itself appearing as the object. This statement can also be established. The second has five parts: refuting that similarity is the establishment of experience; refuting that similar consciousness is the establishment of experience; analyzing the meaning of similarity and refuting it; refuting that similar birth is the establishment of experience; refuting the establishment of experience with certainty. The first is: if it is said that the above thesis is not pervasive, because what else is there to establish the experience of that object other than similarity to that object, there is nothing, so it is said that similarity to the object is the experience of the object. All consciousnesses that are similar to the object have the property. It should be that they experience each other. Because they are similar to each other. The second is: if it is said that merely being similar to the object is not the characteristic of experiencing the object, but rather the similarity that has become the nature of that consciousness is what establishes the experience of the object. Thus, from the similarity to the object that is the nature of that consciousness, it has the property. It should not experience the object. Because the aspect of what is to be grasped that is the consciousness itself appearing as the object is what experiences it. Therefore, the aspect of what is to be grasped that is the consciousness itself appearing as the object, which experiences it, has the property. It should not be the cause of establishing the aspect similar to the object, that is, it should not be what is to be established. Because its experiencer is the one who appears as the object itself, and that is what experiences it. It is pervasive, because this similarity to the object that is the nature of consciousness becomes the cause of establishing the aspects of the activities of separate objects in other worlds, this is form, this is sound, and so on. However, it cannot establish experience. If it is said that consciousness
