Because the meaning of its object of attachment has ceased, and it is not another meaning either. Therefore, that mind is the subject to be proven, and it is also established as self-awareness, because it itself is of two aspects. The two aspects are fivefold: refuting that it possesses the meaning of a genus, refuting that it possesses a non-possessing meaning, refuting that it possesses a meaning other than that, refuting that the aspect arises from the meaning, and refuting that the aspect is different from consciousness. The first is: In the conceptual thought of remembering the past, although the clarity of the past meaning has ceased and does not appear, the meaning of the genus has not ceased and exists, therefore it appears. If it is said that the mind itself is not established as the two aspects of appearing as an object, then, the consciousness that appears in remembering past blue etc. is the subject to be proven, the color blue etc. is not the meaning of the genus that it possesses, because it appears as distinct blue etc. Furthermore, is that genus permanent or impermanent? If impermanent, then it is the subject to be proven, it should not become a genus, because it is not momentary. If it is permanent, then it is also the subject to be proven, how is it the cause of generating the consciousness of remembering, it should not be, because it is permanent. If you admit it, then its object of apprehension is lost. The second is: If it is said that in memory, although the genus of the past meaning does not appear, the non-possessing formations, name and sign appear, then, name etc. are the subject to be proven, you are not the object of apprehension of memory consciousness, because you have already been refuted in "If name etc. are spoken", etc., because of that reason. The third is: This aspect of memory consciousness is the subject to be proven, it does not possess true meaning as the object of apprehension, because it is not established as arising from the power of the object of apprehension, because even without meaning, it arises from mere intention and subsequent association. If it is said that memory consciousness has the aspect of meaning, then, what is the aspect of meaning of its cause, experience? Then, the consciousness of this kind of aspect that focuses on the past is the subject to be proven, it also arises from previously experiencing meaning, that is, realization, because it is remembering meaning. If it is thought that the cause of memory, experience, is also empty of the aspect of meaning, then memory is the subject to be proven, how will it possess the aspect of meaning? It should not possess, because memory arises from the experience of not having the aspect of meaning. The fourth is: If it is said that memory does not arise from experience, but arises directly from the meaning to be remembered, then memory is the subject to be proven.

Since it is not actually produced from its own object of recollection, because at the time of its own substantial cause, that object of recollection does not exist. If it is said that the reason why recollection possesses the appearance of an object is because it is produced from the object, then, in that case, experiential direct perception should also become that which possesses the appearance of an object, because it is produced from the object. Furthermore, the appearance that appears in recollection is not the appearance directly given by the object, because it lacks a clear appearance, that is, because it is empty. Fifth, if the appearance that appears in recollection is an object different from consciousness, then, that appearance, just as it appears to the one who recollects, should also be cognized by other individuals who are in that place, because objects that are different to the mind are able to appear. If it is said that it is not pervasive, since even though it is an object, it is always connected as an object only to my mind, so others cannot cognize it, then, that appearance, even if the one who recollects says "I understood such a thing," others will not be able to cognize it, because it is an object connected only to the mind of the one who recollects, so others cannot cognize it. If it is said that from what the speaker says, others do not cognize the very appearance that appears to the speaker, but rather cognize another appearance of the object that appears to the listener's own mind, then, the object of the minds of the speaker and the listener, the content spoken by the speaker and the content understood by the listener, will not be able to be connected as the same content by those who are attached to appearing as the same content, because if the two minds of the speaker and listener are connected only to their respective objects, then what one grasps, the other cannot grasp. If it is said that the speaker and listener each grasp the object that appears to them separately, but because these objects are similar, they mistake them as one, and thus they call them one, then, at the time of understanding the expressed object from sound, the minds of the speaker and listener should become those that do not have an external object as the object to be grasped, because how can one grasp the nature of different objects appearing to oneself and others as different, yet not grasp them as different but grasp them as one? Because these objects do not appear as different, but are attached to as one. Second, the quantity of appearances.
