That which measures phenomena is valid cognition (pramana), and the self-awareness that experiences it abides as the result. This is the subject of debate. This should be applied to all minds, because self-awareness is the nature of the valid cognition's result. For example, in the system of the Sautrantikas, when desire and so forth are taken as the object to be measured, the self-awareness that experiences it, the manifest valid cognition's result, abides therein. The application of this is that, in the system of the Sautrantikas, the self-awareness that experiences desire and so forth, even that manifest self-awareness, those desires and so forth, are the subject of debate. It is possible to experience one's own nature, because it is the nature of experience. Similarly, in the system that posits phenomena as false appearances, whatever mind it may be is the subject of debate. It is possible to be experienced, it is valid cognition, its own nature is the object to be measured, and the self-awareness that experiences it is the result, because it is knowledge. Thirdly, if the aspect of apprehension or that which can be self-experienced is valid cognition, then is this contradictory to what the teacher Dignaga said, that self-awareness is valid cognition? Dignaga is the subject of debate. Here, the aspect of apprehension and that which can be experienced are said to be valid cognition, and your saying that self-awareness is valid cognition is not contradictory, because you call that part of the nature of knowledge itself, which completely severs the knowledge itself, which has the name 'aspect of apprehension,' as that which can be self-experienced, and valid cognition is said to be self-awareness, because it is an extensive explanation of the part that performs self-awareness. In short, previously the apprehended aspect was taken as the object to be measured, the apprehending aspect as valid cognition, and self-awareness as the result. For that valid cognition's result, since the realists posit the apprehended aspect as knowledge, the nature of self-awareness is considered the result. Since the illusionists posit the apprehended aspect as untrue in both meaning and knowledge, self-awareness is considered the imputed result. Therefore, "For that, the mind is the cutter," and so forth, defines the valid cognition's result of the nature of self-awareness in the system of the illusionists, meaning that when any mind is taken as the object to be measured, it is established. Secondly, there are two explanations of the proof of that establishment: explaining the reasoning that proves the two modes, and explaining the reasoning that proves self-awareness. The first part has two: explaining and proving that the object-consciousness is that consciousness, and explaining and proving later recollection. The first part has seven: proving through the difference of whether or not there is doubt, and proving through the difference of many or few aspects.

It is established by... It is established by the sign of certainty of co-emergent object. It is established by the difference between clear and unclear faculties. It is established by the appearance of the mandala even though it is not there. It is established by the three differences of near, far, and intermediate. It is established because even though the object of grasping has ceased, the appearance exists. The first has two: it is established by the arising of the aspect of meaning in meaning. It is established by the appearance of the aspect of meaning without meaning. The first is: if one accepts that consciousness has two aspects and establishes the three, measure, result, and measurable, then how are the two aspects established? In short, the sutra says, "The difference between the object of knowledge and its knowledge is the two aspects." Regarding the meaning of what was said, the sutra maker himself has two lines of reasoning, and the treatise maker has five lines of reasoning, for a total of seven. The first is: all consciousnesses that arise from objects such as form and sound are dharmas. Even if others besides the object, such as faculties and mind, are your cause, you will still arise in the aspect of the object, not others. You arise in the aspect of the object because it is your nature. For example, food, seasons, actions, parents, etc. are the cause of giving birth to a child, but the child will take on the appearance of one of the parents, not the appearance of other foods, etc. Therefore, objects such as form are dharmas. Although faculties and so on other than the object are the same cause as that consciousness, it is asserted that the consciousness that arises with your aspect is the object of knowledge in terms of that part, because that consciousness arises with its own aspect, and without that, it will not become the object of knowledge like faculties and mind, and because it is the object of knowledge. Therefore, consciousness is a two-aspect one that manifests the aspect of the object. The second has two: because there is no meaning, there is no doubt about no aspect. Refuting others who desire to have meaning. The first is: for minds, faculties, non-deluded, etc. that have meaning, it is a dharma. There may be doubt about the appearance of no meaning, because it is mistaken for grasping the meaning itself. Even so, for the conceptualization that grasps past objects such as vases, it is a dharma. It is established as a two-aspect one because it appears as both object and subject. There is appearance as both object and subject, and because what appears as object is not another meaning other than oneself.
