Because eyes not deluded by mantras, etc., do not see horses, cattle, etc., in that way. For example, in a distant, vast, and flat desert, even small things appear large, but this does not mean that small things actually become large. The second point is: For the single mind that perceives objects, it is not contradictory to establish measure, result, and measurement in name only. Although the aspects of grasping, being grasped, and self-awareness that you possess are not different in essence, the establishment of these three as measurable, measuring (i.e., valid cognition), and existing as the result, respectively, is merely a supposition, just as it appears to a deluded consciousness, and is not a true establishment. The third point is divided into two parts: establishing the subject property and presenting the reason. The first part is: The appearance of the three different aspects of grasping, being grasped, and self-awareness in a single mind is not true. If it is not so, but true, then do the various images that appear in a single mind truly exist as many or as one? If according to the first case, then the single, indivisible essence of mind, you who possess various images that appear as various natures, how can they truly exist as many? This is not true, because you are the nature of a single mind. If it does not pervade, then mind, your very oneness will disappear and become many, because what appears as many truly exists as many. If according to the latter case, then the various images that appear in a single mind do not truly exist as one, because they appear as many in a non-deluded mind. If it does not pervade, then pain and pleasure, etc., those other things themselves will disappear. Because of the non-pervasion. Furthermore, these images are not truly the nature of one, because they are not seen as the nature of one. This is pervasive, because the valid cognition mind sees things without difference, so it will definitely determine no difference, otherwise it will not be established as no difference. The second point is: The objects of appearance that appear in the consciousness of object appearance, when analyzed with reason, they themselves do not exist as true objects, because they do not possess the true nature of one and many. All of the above are caused by false appearances, for the form that appears in the consciousness of object appearance.

Since the appearance of consciousness has been established as unreal, the modes of apprehension and self-awareness that depend on it are also established as unreal. The assertion that the modes of apprehension and self-awareness that depend on self-illuminating consciousness are real will be discussed below. The distinction between true and false appearances is the only point in the great systems of tenets where there is no error, and seeking something other than this is nothing but a mistake. Fourth, if, according to this Mind-Only school, it is unreasonable for a cognition that is non-dual in terms of grasper and grasped to give rise to the illusion of being dual, it is because the cause of the illusion of duality, namely, seeing something that accords with the truth of grasper and grasped, is absent, since in this context, nothing is seen to be of the nature of the truth of grasper and grasped. This is pervasive. Generally, the arising of illusion is not without a cause. Just as one mistakes mica for silver, it is because one sees something similar and then clings to something that is not the thing itself, thinking it is the thing itself, that illusions arise for worldly people. If it is said that this is pervasive, it is not always the case that the arising of illusion requires seeing something similar beforehand, because illusion can arise even without seeing something similar. This is because the illusion of grasping at grasper and grasped, which arises from being obscured by internal ignorance, arises from internal faults, and therefore its nature or essence is to appear inverted. For example, someone with cataracts sees strands of hair, and so on. The second part has three points: self-awareness is established through experiencing the nature of the apprehended aspect; applying the measure and result of self-awareness to all cognitions; and avoiding contradictions with the assertion that self-awareness is a valid cognition. First: If, according to the system of false appearances, the apprehended aspect is false, then if self-awareness is posited in relation to that, what is the measure and result of the characteristic of self-awareness? For those who assert that appearances are false, the mind itself is the subject. What you consider to be the aspect of apprehension that completely cuts off is self-awareness, because you are the nature of that aspect of apprehension that completely cuts off. Therefore, the apprehended aspect is the subject, and self-awareness is the means of establishing it, because it is capable of demonstrating self-awareness. Second: Even in the system that asserts that appearances are false, when the nature of the mind itself is taken as an object, the self-measured and the apprehension that completely cuts it off.
