That. Its own nature is free from conceptualization, because its own nature does not grasp name and meaning, because its own nature is name and meaning, that is, not the actual object of the name. Therefore, all cognitions, both conceptual and non-conceptual, are characterized by the fact that their own nature is manifest to them, because their own nature is a non-conceptual and unerring cognition. Secondly, in order to understand without error, the appearance of seeming direct perception is explained. In brief: "Confusion and conventional knowledge, Inference arising from inference, Memory and desire, Are called seeming direct perception, together with dizziness." It is said that confusion is like the conceptualization of grasping water in a mirage. Conventional knowledge is like the conceptualization of grasping the substance, number, action, generality, etc. of a pot. Inference is the mind that grasps the sign. That which arises from inference is valid inference (pramāṇa). Memory is the recollection of the past. Desire is like the mind that desires future things. In this treatise, the first is to impute to other meanings, the second is to have a basis in terminology, and the latter four are conceptualizations with hidden meanings, which are summarized into three and explained. There are three here: seeming direct perception is summarized into four, the necessity of the three conceptualizations is explained, and the meaning of distinguishing confusion is explained. The first is that the seven seeming direct perceptions mentioned in the summary are characterized by the fact that they are grouped into four types according to their necessity: conventional knowledge has a basis in terminology, confused knowledge imputes to other meanings, the four inferences and so on are conceptualizations with hidden meanings, that is, the three types of conceptual knowledge, and one non-conceptual knowledge that arises from the confusion of the basis, the subject, and the cause, are all included in them. The second has two parts: the necessity is briefly stated, and the nature is explained in detail. The first is that the two, conventional knowledge and confused knowledge, are said to be seeming direct perception, which is necessary because they are established as not being knowledge arising from the senses. These two must be established as not being sense consciousness, because it is seen that the intelligent ones mistake them for sense consciousness. Some say that it is not direct perception arising from the senses, which is a bit rough, because even the intelligent ones

Because it is not admitted that confused knowledge is direct perception. In the Compendium, it says, "A knower is a non-erroneous knowledge born from the encounter of the root and the object, possessing the nature of clinging, and is direct perception." That is why it is said. Although it is established that inference and the other four are not root consciousnesses, it is necessary to say that they are a difference of apparent direct perception, because it is to establish that the first two discriminations are not born from the root, and to explain them as a common example. The second has three: explaining the expanded vision of confusion; explaining the expanded establishment of inference and so on; explaining the way the former is established. First, what are the causes of confusing the two as root consciousnesses? Like the general apprehension of a vase that has a name as its basis, and the discriminations that attribute something to another thing, like apprehending water in a mirage, are dharmas. At some times, there is a cause of confusing them as root-born, because they are close to the direct perception of the root that sees vases and mirages, and by the way they enter together, doubts arise about entering their objects. Second, for example, the four discriminations such as memory, which have hidden meanings, do not directly apprehend the apprehended meaning of direct perception, because apprehending one's own object is a state that relies on the memory of one's own object's name. Third, for example, like that, the conventional knowledge that apprehends the general characteristics of vases and so on, and the confused knowledge that apprehends water in a mirage and so on, are also dharmas, and will completely degenerate from apprehending the apprehended meaning of direct perception, because without the memory of the names of vases and so on that have been experienced before, they themselves do not exist. The third has three: stating one's own school that it is root consciousness; refuting others' schools that it is mind discrimination; summarizing and explaining the meaning of refutation and establishment. First, in this context of explaining apparent direct perception, it is necessary that the teacher said with the words "the fourth non-discriminating confused consciousness is different from the category of discrimination, it is with obscurity", because in general, being without discrimination is direct perception, but if it is confused, it is like direct perception.
