One is because it acts with a nature that is contrary to being able to perform the function of an ox, as has already been stated in the chapter on self-interest. Second, the explanation of mental direct perception, including refuting the three causes of dispute: In the Pramāṇasūtra, it says, "The mind also with objects..." and in its commentary, it says, "The mind also focuses on the transformation into forms and so forth, and enters in the manner of experiencing, therefore it is non-conceptual." Explaining this meaning is divided into two parts: the general establishment of the form and the meaning of the text. The first part is: The Sugata said, "Monks, the cognition of form is of two kinds, namely, relying on the eye and the mind." In order to illustrate the direct perception that relies on the mind, Dignāga (Tibetan: ཕྱོགས་གླང་) directly showed the proof of non-conceptuality through "The mind also with objects..." and established it through the way of implying the commitment. Dharmakīrti (Tibetan: དཔལ་ལྡན་གྲགས་པ་) thought that the proof of non-conceptuality had already been shown in the previous section on sense direct perception, so he did not explain it here. Instead, the non-ear-pierced heretics (Tibetan: མུ་སྟེགས་རྣ་བ་མ་ཕུག་པ་) raised two arguments against the meaning of Dignāga's acceptance of mental direct perception. As an answer to these arguments, some people prevented the mental direct perception from holding the object already held by the sense direct perception as its immediate condition, and their own school held that even if it holds something different from what the sense direct perception holds, there would be no fault of a blind person seeing forms. And refuted the argument that it would hold an undetermined self-object. Extending from that, it prevented the object and subject of mental direct perception from occurring simultaneously. Extending from that, if they are not simultaneous, then it refuted the contradiction between the object and subject. These six points are shown in order by "If holding what was previously experienced..." and so on, "Because it is only a moment..." and so on, "Therefore, the root's..." and so on, "Self-interest follows..." and so on, "Its time of action..." and so on, "Because the times are different..." and so on. The second part has four aspects: recording the dispute of examining the two extremes; refuting other answers that consider the former reasonable; stating to oneself that considers the latter reasonable; and refuting the indirect argument against it. The first is: The non-ear-pierced heretic says: Does this mental direct perception hold the object that was previously held by the sense direct perception, or does it hold an object that was not held? If it is like the first case, then the mental direct perception is the subject of the property, it is not a valid cognition, because it holds what was previously experienced by a valid cognition.
