It transforms because it is generally established through the means of grasping as knowable by conceptual thought. The third question is: Then even the texture of hair should become a generality, because conceptual thought grasps it as knowable. Answer: The appearance of the conceptual mind that grasps the hair and other such things, and also the hair texture and other such things of other cognitions as such objects, is the subject. There is no prohibition against being a general characteristic, because it is the object of appearance of conceptual thought. For the mistaken sense consciousness, the appearance of the hair and other things appearing clearly is the subject. It is a self-characteristic, because it is the very meaning of the essence of cognition. The conceptual mind that examines what is called hair and other things is the subject. Your object of appearance is not a self-characteristic, because you are a conceptual thought that has a general object. The sense consciousness that appears as hair is the subject. Your object of apprehension is neither a self-characteristic nor a generality, because you are devoid of an object of apprehension. The fourth question is: If the generality is the appearance to conceptual thought, then the form is the subject. It will become a self-characteristic, because it is the very meaning of the essence of cognition. Answer: Sautrāntika, the subject, there is no fault in the appearance to conceptual thought being a self-characteristic, because it is accepted that the appearance to conceptual thought is a self-characteristic. Then how is it established as a generality? The appearance of the pot and other things to conceptual thought is the subject. The aspect of clinging to the nature of the external object is established as a generality, because that aspect of clinging to the nature of the external object has the same nature in the face of conceptual thought for all clear appearances of the pot, and in the face of conceptual thought it depends on being different from what is not a pot. Second, the discussion of whether or not a characteristic exists in a thing is divided into two: Establishing that the characteristic of a generality does not exist in a thing; Establishing that a thing is only a self-characteristic. The first part has eight points: Establishing through being the object expressed by the reality of sound; Establishing through being unable to express as either this or that; Establishing similarity in the way of grasping and appearing of destruction; Establishing being a generality of the same difference; Establishing through distinguishing whether or not it is a result; Establishing through being the object of appearance of the cognition of conventional memory; Establishing through the absence of autonomous grasping cognition; Establishing through the sign of being empty of the ability to perform a function. The first part is divided into two: Establishing the reason and establishing pervasion; Refuting disputes about establishing pervasion itself. First: The generality of the pot and other things, the subject.

Things are not like that, because sound directly expresses the very thing to be expressed. If it is not pervasive, then the self-character (svabhāva) as the subject, the cognition arising from appearance, the sense consciousness will become meaningless, because you directly cognize from the sound. It cannot be thought so, because the three conditions such as the senses are not the result, that is, not something with necessity. Because there is no other necessity than the cognition arising from the appearance of self-character. The second part has three points: denying the meaning of the senses etc. by stating names etc.; denying the meaning of the senses etc. by stating general object; denying the meaning of the senses etc. for the sake of direct perception. The first part has two points: stating the view and posing questions; refuting the three extremes of the questions posed separately. The first point is: those who are respected by many hearers say that although sound directly expresses things, the senses etc. will not become meaningless, because the name, that is, the form of the sound, and so on, the sign, that is, the form of the object, form, mind, and non-associated compositional factors other than substances arising from the mind, are directly expressed by sound, and the senses etc. are needed to cognize the self-character of form etc. If so, then the sound "vase", does it express the name etc. related to the mind of the speaker and the listener? Or does it express the name etc. related to the vase to be expressed? Or does it express the name etc. that is not related to either the mind or the object? The second part has three points: refuting the expression related to the mind; excluding the expression unrelated in the same way; refuting the expression related to the object. The first part has five points: presenting the absurd conclusion and refuting the error; presenting the reason that is not the same as oneself; that reason does not exist in other things; even if it exists, it will not be possible to prove what is to be proven; refuting that all knowledges that can prove are meaningful. The first point is: if it is said that the expression is only related to the mind of the speaker and the listener, then, the person seeking meaning as the subject, from the sound "vase", will not understand the meaning of the self-character of the vase, because the sound "vase" does not express the self-character of the vase. If the name etc. of the vase and the self-character of the vase are confused as one because the ways are the same, therefore the meaning will be understood from the sound expressing the name etc. of the vase, then, the sound "vase" as the subject, when you understand the meaning from the sound, you are not always understanding by mistaking the name etc. of the vase as the vase.
