Because valid cognition can ascertain that others have mind or speech. How is it ascertained? The other person who speaks, as the subject of debate, is necessarily established as having the nature of mind, because they engage in speech and other expressions. This is derived from that reason. The second part is divided into two points: the main point and refuting arguments. The first point is: inferences such as inferring fire from smoke and trees from animal tracks, as the subject of debate, are themselves valid cognitions, because they are non-deceptive knowledge. The second part is divided into two points: arguments and answers. The first point is: If it is said that although some reasons that possess the three modes are not mistaken, some reasons that possess the three modes are not reliable, therefore the minds that rely on them are not non-deceptive, because in some reasons, such as inferring greenness from Devadatta's son, mistakes are seen. The second part is divided into two points: If mistaken, it is not a correct reason; a correct sign has no mistake. The first point is: Materialists, as the subject of debate, because you see a false sign that does not possess the three modes as possessing the three modes. The sign that does not possess the three modes is seen as such a mistake, because the sign that does not possess the three modes is not a correct reason, because even if you think that the sign that does not possess the three modes possesses the three modes, in reality it does not possess the three modes. The second part is divided into two points: The establishing sign has no mistake; the refuting sign has no mistake. The first point is: Like smoke and animal tracks, at some times, on some objects of debate, the smoke and animal tracks that establish the cognition of fire and trees, as the subject of debate, your claim is impossible, that is, there is no cause of its own—fire, or no nature of its own—trees, because they are born from fire, or are undoubtedly the nature of trees. Other reasons that possess the three modes are also impossible to be mistaken, because the result and the pervaded are established in nature with the cause and the pervader, therefore whatever is seen as non-deceptive is itself the definition of other reasons that possess the three modes that are also not mistaken, because that is the establisher. The second point is: If there are animal tracks that can be seen as their nature being trees, or smoke that can be seen as its cause being fire, if other causes, such as the senses, are present in the basis, and the nature and cause are not apparent, then it is sufficient.

Those who have [the view of] existence say: If the ground possesses inherent nature and cause, then the trunk, which possesses inherent nature, and the fruits, such as smoke, should also exist; otherwise, it is not established. Because the ground is the tree of inherent nature, and the cause is being consumed by fire. The third [point] is: If general wisdom, inference, is not valid cognition, but only direct perception is valid cognition, then the object seen by the opponent should obtain the absence of all hidden meanings. Because the absence of all hidden meanings is not currently established by one's own direct perception. For example, like objects of other worlds. If it is said that one's own hidden things can be understood at other times by one's own sense direct perceptions, so there is no fault of those not existing. Then, the mind of ordinary people's sense direct perception is such that you cannot understand all hidden things at other times, because you cannot enter into the sense organs being physical, and the ability of causes to produce effects, etc. If it is said that it is understood that those do not exist precisely because of that. Then, the wisdom of the sense organs and the arising of effects will become without cause. Because the sense organs are physical, and the cause does not have the ability to produce effects. The fourth [point] is: Not only direct perception is valid cognition, but valid cognition can be established as two types: direct perception and inference. Because when the self-character appears, non-conceptual wisdom enters, so when the characteristic of the self appears, direct perception enters as the measurer. Because non-conceptual does not grasp the general, therefore inference enters as the measurer of the general. The second [part] is to refute the distorted conceptions of the majority side, which is divided into two parts: stating the two distorted conceptions together, and explaining the reasons for refuting them separately. The first part has three points: Grasping the mixed is another valid cognition, seeing the difference is another valid cognition, therefore it is not possible to eliminate other numbers from the two. The first point is: Those who have reasoning say: Valid cognition, color cannot be understood as impermanent. Because the object to be measured is determined between self-character and general-character. It is pervasive. Because color is self-character and impermanence is general-character, so color impermanence is a mixture of self-character and general-character. Therefore, the wisdom that understands color impermanence will become another valid cognition other than the two valid cognitions, because it is general-character, so it is not direct perception.
