Therefore, it is because you consider that from the way of entering, the object to be measured is twofold. The second is, the second way of understanding—inference, you consider it to be an illusion, because it does not truly grasp the meaning of the self-character, but grasps its own appearance as the meaning. The third part is divided into two points: stating the tenet, and explaining the refutation. The first point is: If one grasps the aspect of meaning, which is the aspect of things other than the self-character, as the self-character, and thereby understands through inference, then inference does not become the means of obtaining the self-character, because it grasps the aspect of non-self-character as the self-character, because the self-character does not actually appear. Or, inference does not become a valid cognition, because it is an illusion. If you say that these two can produce a svatantra-hetu, then the second part is divided into two points: briefly stating from the perspective of the probans, and explaining in detail from the perspective of the example. The first point is: Inference, although it is an illusion in the appearing object, is indeed a valid cognition in the entering object, because although it is an illusion in the appearing object, it is an unerring knowledge in the intended entering object. The previous inference does not have pervasion, because even grasping the light of a jewel, which is different from the jewel, as a jewel, one can see that one recognizes the jewel, that is, obtains the jewel. Moreover, the probandum of the svatantra-hetu deduced by the previous inference—inference appearing as the self-character and understanding, is unreasonable, because for this side, it has already been answered with "because the statement itself" and so on. The second point is: Then, will all conceptualizations become valid cognitions? Inference and the conceptualizations appearing there, although they are the same in not truly grasping the meaning of the self-character of things, are nevertheless established as valid and non-valid cognitions, because there is a difference in the function of obtaining the entering object and whether or not they are in accordance. For example, the consciousness that grasps the light of a jewel and the light of a lamp as a jewel, although there is no difference in the reversed cognition, there is a difference in the function of obtaining the jewel, because when you run to obtain the jewel with it, there is a difference in whether or not it produces a valid cognition that recognizes the jewel. Here, the consciousness that grasps the light of a jewel as a jewel is the inference of Jñānaśrī, the perception of Alaṃkāra, and the non-valid cognition of Dharmottara.

Among the three cases of considering it to be so, the last one is the view of the treatise, because it is said to be inverted knowledge, and because it is not that but is attached to that. Then, how should one understand the so-called difference in function? First, the direct perception of grasping the light of a jewel arises. Then, due to the cause of confusion, the inverted consciousness that thinks "this is a jewel" arises. After that, when the characteristic of being the light of a jewel is grasped, it is also possible that an inference arises from that sign, realizing that a jewel exists. If it is not certain that it is the light of a jewel, running in order to obtain it, when going forward, the direct perception of seeing the jewel arises. Therefore, the jewel is the object of those two valid cognitions, but not the object of inverted consciousness. Here, the example taken is that inverted consciousness itself, and the way it functions has already been explained. After the direct perception of seeing the light of a lamp, even if the inverted consciousness that thinks "this is a jewel" arises, it is impossible to generate the previous two valid cognitions, therefore it is said that there is a difference in function. In this way, the power of the words "running directly," "inverted knowledge," and "difference in function" are revealed, and the way of applying the metaphor is also understood. The second part has three points: Understanding with one's own nature is direct perception. Understanding with the nature of another is inference. Therefore, having been measured, the definite number of valid cognitions is established. The first point is: The mind, which takes external objects as its own characteristics and follows the function of the object being grasped, understands the self-characteristic of the object as its own nature, because attachment to that self-characteristic of the object is autonomous. Many previous great masters, in La's commentary, apply "Since the object to be measured is two, the valid cognition is also two" to the universal establishment, and when combining it with the three sentences of the treatise, "That is the nature of self and other," "Attachment to that is autonomous," and "The basis of understanding is another meaning," it does not go beyond this range. The second part has three points: Understanding the obscure depends on signs. The difference between the sign and what is to be proven is explained. Therefore, it is established by inference itself. The first point is: External objects other than the object of grasping, because they are obscure beyond the senses, are selves that are not seen by direct perception.
