Because it is tangible. If it is said that the general characteristic is also the same, then various categories are the subject to be proven. For the direct perception of the noble ones, it does not appear without relying on manifestation, because apart from manifestation, it is impossible to see anything that can appear. If it is thought that when seeing the manifestation, one can also see the general characteristic, then when grasping the manifestation of a cow, the sense consciousness is the subject to be proven. It is impossible to see the general characteristic of a cow, because apart from the sound of that cow, that is, the name, color, and shape, etc., no other general characteristic appears. Eighth, that general characteristic is the subject to be proven. It is also not possible to merely produce the function of self-grasping consciousness, because apart from self-grasping consciousness, it does not appear. Therefore, the general characteristic is the subject to be proven. It is established as not having the nature of a thing, because that function is not possible. The pervasion is established, because being empty of the ability to function is the characteristic of non-things. Second, establishing things as self-characteristics: Whatever is a thing is considered its own characteristic, because it is the opposite of what is expressed by the thing of sound, etc., as said before. Here, saying that establishing the self-characteristic as a thing, this seems to be just connecting with words without understanding the previous ability. Third, showing the difference of general characteristics, divided into two: things and refuting arguments. First: If the general characteristic does not exist in things, then will the difference also disappear? The general characteristic is also the subject to be proven. There are three types, such as the general characteristic of living beings that depends on things, such as the general characteristic of non-living beings that depends on non-things, and such as the general characteristic of knowable objects that depends on both. This and the first chapter say that there are three types of general characteristics. Generally speaking, the establishment is from the aspect of clinging to the meaning in the form of conceptualization, so the name of the general characteristic that depends on both is mentioned. As for the exclusion of others, the exclusion of others from things and the exclusion of others from non-things are divided into two types. This is established from the perspective of excluding different categories, so it is believed that the different categories to be excluded must be things and non-things. The second is divided into two: argument and answer. First: If the conceptualization that grasps the general characteristic that depends on things is the subject to be proven. Then it will become knowing by appearing the self-characteristic of things, because it is related to the following and separating of the self-characteristic of things.

If it is said that it is because it is knowledge, the second is: That (thing) dharma characteristic, it is not known from the appearance of its own characteristic, because it has already been answered in the occasion of "your appearing object is a thing, because it is expressible," and for the conceptualization that grasps past and future things, because it sees other images from the association with the self-characteristic of things, so the reason (hetu) is also not established. If it is said that the general characteristic of things is the dharma nature of things, then it will be lost, because the conceptualization that grasps things has no direct connection with things. If you say so, the general characteristic of things, dharma characteristic, you do not have the fault of losing the dharma of things, because the conceptual mind that is preceded by the direct perception that takes form and other things as its object is the knowledge that grasps you. Second, summarizing the object of entry, the measurable, and the self-characteristic into one: Then, is the measurable necessarily divided into self-characteristic and general characteristic from the perspective of its essence? From the perspective of the way of entering, it is divided into self-characteristic and general characteristic, and only the nature of the self-characteristic is the measurable that has become the object of the valid means of entering and withdrawing, which is universally designated by names, because all the things that are observed in the existence or non-existence of entering and withdrawing of the definite understanding that it leads are accomplished by that self-characteristic itself. Moreover, the meaning of the external object, which is only the self-characteristic, is the object to be grasped when measured by direct perception, and the object to be adhered to when measured by inference. When both are entered by a person, they are established as the object of entry because they are not deceptive. When measured by inference, the part of the self-characteristic's image that is confused with the nature of the entity in the external object is established as the general characteristic. Therefore, if you understand the key to the conceptualization that is divided into self-characteristic and general characteristic from the perspective of the way of entering, even though it is only the self-characteristic, then there is no need for other cutting off of doubts at this time. Third, there are three ways to eliminate the contradiction with the two things that were spoken of on it: Establish two from the perspective of the way of understanding. Show that the second way of understanding is confused. Eliminate the non-valid means on that. The first is: If only the self-characteristic is the measurable, then it contradicts what Dignāga said that two natures are measurable. Dignāga, dharma characteristic, it is not considered from the perspective of the entity that the measurable is the self-characteristic and the general characteristic, because the self-characteristic is known by the self-entity of direct perception, and by inference it is known by the entity of other general characteristics.
