That external object's own characteristic nature is the subject. It is understood through the mode of otherness, because the basis for your understanding is the reason of otherness. Second, does one understand the hidden own-characteristic from all reasons? If that reason is the basis of the subject and is related to the dharma, then like smoke, it is the subject. On some basis, it is the indicator of hidden fire, because in proving it, the three aspects are complete. Does one understand all the distinctions of the hidden from a sign that possesses the three aspects? When the three aspects are complete, like the indicator smoke, it is the subject. From you, on some basis, one will not understand all the meanings of the hidden fire, such as the distinctions of being clear and blazing, because the fire that pervades your concomitance is understood as the general nature of fire, not the distinctions of being clear and blazing, therefore, because of that reason. Third, the proof of the hidden own-characteristic is definitely one inference, because from the dharma of the reason that is related to the subject and the dharma, the understanding of the hidden own-characteristic arises in the subject, therefore, because of that reason. Third, with respect to different minds, the object to be measured is definitely two in number, manifest and hidden, therefore, it is asserted that valid cognition is definitely two, direct perception and inference, because there is no other way to understand the object to be measured other than understanding the same own-characteristic in the manner of being manifest and hidden. Third, showing that other numbers are eliminated by that method, from the two valid cognitions, direct perception and inference, the greater number of three and so on, and the smaller number of one are eliminated, because it is seen that the object to be measured, the own-characteristic, is definitely two in number, manifest and hidden. Second, refuting the wrong conceptions of wanting other numbers is divided into two: refuting the wrong conceptions on the side of being fewer, and refuting the wrong conceptions on the side of being more. The first is divided into two: stating the wrong conception of wanting one, and analyzing and refuting that. First, the Lokayata says, the universal is the subject, it is not an object to be measured, because it does not exist, because it is not seen directly. Therefore, the object to be measured is the one own-characteristic that is seen directly, therefore only the direct perception that measures it is valid cognition, and inference is not.

If it is said like that, the second aspect has four points: refuting the argument that is not inferential valid cognition; establishing the argument that is inferential valid cognition; if it is not inferential valid cognition, then it would be too extreme. Therefore, it shows the establishment of two valid cognitions. The first point is: because the universal does not exist in things, things are not measurable, which I also admit, because it has been said that one's own nature is the only object of measurement. Non-existence in the aspect of exclusion is also the subject. Your reason cannot determine that the universal is not a measurable object, because you are determined by valid cognition. The so-called "dam" refers to guiding to the bottom. The second aspect has two points: the refutation of inference is established by the promise itself; the establishment of inference is established by the reasoning of the power of things. The first aspect has two points: the actual meaning and the refutation of refuting faults. The first point is: the second valid cognition, inference, is the subject. You are established, because the valid cognition that determines the negation of the non-existence of the universal is you yourself. The second aspect has two points: refuting the argument of the entry of direct perception; refuting the argument of the realization of direct perception. The first point is not established, because the negation is determined by the sense direct perception. If it is said like that, the consciousness direct perception arising from the sense is the subject. It is not entering the negation as a measurer, because it arises from the power of its own object of apprehension. If this is not established, the consciousness direct perception arising from the sense is the subject. Even if there are obstacles such as walls between you and the object, it will arise, because it is knowledge that does not depend on the ability of the object of apprehension. The second point is: if the dharma of the object of negation is determined to be non-existent from the reverse of the direct perception that holds it, and not by the entry of direct perception to determine the negation, then, by the negation of the reverse of direct perception itself to determine the non-existence of the universal, this is either self-contradictory, or if it is used as a reason to determine the non-existence of the universal, then the inferential valid cognition that relies on the sign is established, because the reverse of direct perception itself is the reverse of establishing the non-existence of the universal, and it is a sign with concomitance. The second aspect has two points: inference is established by realizing the minds of others; valid cognition is established by not deceiving. The first point is: not only the previous reasoning, but also the second valid cognition is established.
