There is no other way to eliminate (ego-grasping). There is no other way to eliminate attachment to "mine." The first has three parts: Knowing faults cannot remove the object of attachment; knowing faults cannot prevent the real cause; showing contradiction in the acceptance of faults themselves. The first: If it is said that although I see myself as faultless, I see attachment to myself as having faults, then what will happen from seeing that? If it is said that it will eliminate attachment to myself, then that person who sees attachment to myself as having faults, has the property that he cannot eliminate attachment to myself, because the object of attachment to myself, the virtuous self, has not been refuted, that is, because he sees himself as virtuous. It is pervasive: Attachment to myself arises from seeing my virtues. Whatever object is followed by seeing virtues is attachment, and whatever object is followed by seeing faults is hatred. Similarly, the elimination of jealousy and stinginess, etc., is because those virtues and faults are not seen in the object, and it is not eliminated by eliminating external objects to be eliminated, like pulling out thorns. The second: The ego-grasping person who sees attachment to himself as having faults, has the property that by what is the result, attachment to himself, prevented, that is, it cannot be prevented, because the complete cause of attachment to himself, the grasping of himself as virtuous, exists. Grasping oneself as virtuous is the cause of attachment to oneself, because attachment to oneself is due to seeing virtues, not because of seeing my virtues, but because of seeing my virtues. The third: What faults are seen in attachment to myself? If it is said that because it is the basis of suffering, it should be abandoned, then this attachment to myself, has the property that even though it is the basis of suffering, it should not be separated from attachment, because even though it is the basis of suffering, it is ultimately seen as me. For example, although I am the basis of suffering, because it is the cause of the mind that grasps me, it should not be separated from attachment. If it is said that I do not become a fault, because if there are no friends such as attachment to myself and mine, then I alone am not the cause of suffering. Then attachment to myself, etc., that

Furthermore, the subject is: the self is similar to that, therefore it should be without fault, because if I am not a companion, then you alone are not the cause of suffering. If that is the desire, then attachment to the self and attachment to both the self should not be the object of separation, because both of them are without fault. Secondly, there are four: one cannot abandon by meditating on suffering such as the senses; one cannot abandon by knowing the difference between the senses and the self; one cannot abandon by being disgusted with suffering; refuting the contradiction with what is said to be meditated on as suffering. First, there are two: stating the desire; explaining the refutation. First: if, like abandoning a limb held by a snake by meditating on it as the cause of suffering, even if there is self-grasping, one can abandon attachment to the self and what belongs to the self by meditating on them as the cause of suffering, then the pervasion that there is necessarily attachment to the self is not established, if asked. Second, there are two: refuting the example; refuting the meaning. First: this limb held by a snake, the subject is: you are not abandoned merely by meditating on it as suffering, but you are abandoned by destroying the thought of what belongs to the self, and conversely, if there is a thought of what belongs to the self, then you are not abandoned. Second, there are seven: if there is grasping of what belongs to the self, it is impossible to abandon; if one abandons what belongs to the self, then there is no characteristic of what belongs to the self; if there is self-grasping, then attachment to what belongs to the self arises; the effort of meditating on suffering becomes meaningless; if the self is without fault, then there is no object of attachment and separation; one cannot abandon attachment by knowing the faults; one cannot abandon because there is no harm to the cause. First, there are two: if there is grasping of what belongs to the self, there is no separation from attachment; refuting the proof of destroying the grasping of what belongs to the self. First: the one who has self-grasping knowing that what belongs to the self is faulty, the subject is: from where does the attachment to and separation from that which belongs to the self come, it should not be, because by what will the thought of grasping what belongs to the self as one's own be reversed, it should not be reversed, because the senses and so on, what belongs to the self, that is the basis of enjoyment, because it is grasped as the very cause of benefiting oneself. It is pervasive, because hair, nails, etc. that are separated from the body are not grasped as the cause of benefiting oneself, therefore the thought of disgust arises, and hair, etc. that are on another's body are grasped as the cause of benefiting oneself, therefore the thought with attachment arises, all of which is manifest.
