Because of this, constant things do not have the ability to produce results. The third (section) is divided into three parts: (1) showing that craving is the main factor; (2) citing scriptural evidence for argumentation; (3) declaring that craving is the only cause. The first (part): Because suffering is not without cause, nor is it a constant cause, therefore, with the name of the accumulation of afflictions, with the body and enjoyment included in existence, the craving for desire is the cause of suffering. Because, taking humans as an example, the special characteristic of sentient beings' objects is that they slightly completely grasp, that is, receive, all of which is caused by the thought of wanting to obtain that object, that is, craving. If it is said that desire for existence is the cause of suffering, then in the sutras, what is the noble truth of the accumulation of suffering? It is this craving, which is the cause of rebirth, accompanied by joyful desire, the state of being very joyful towards this and that, such as: desire craving, existence craving, and non-existence craving. If it is said that all three cravings are causes, isn't this contradictory? It is not contradictory, because what is said is existence craving, because sentient beings want to obtain happiness and want to abandon suffering, so the craving of taking and abandoning, those are sequentially desire craving and non-existence craving. This is said to be the difference between general and specific characteristics. This is the view of the gods. Shakya (Buddha) believes that striving for the desire realm is desire craving, striving for the upper two realms is existence craving, and wanting to abandon suffering is non-existence craving. Although it is said this way, it is a mixture with the Abhidharma, and it is not obvious for the meaning of this treatise. Therefore, ordinary people, these three cravings are existence, that is, the basis for birth in samsara, because taking self-attachment as the cause, they perceive the contaminated happiness that is not happiness as happiness, and because of craving for happiness, they are extremely involved in and receive all good and bad objects. The second (section) is divided into two parts: (1) the main statement; (2) refuting disputes. The first (part): Because birth without detachment is not seen, the teachers say that craving is the cause of birth. The teacher Vasubandhu said, because which detached person

Because not seeing the unborn, it is said that birth is caused by desire. The second statement is, the Lokayata says: Then desire should also arise from the body, because not seeing desire without a body, so it is the same. If asked this way, then, the previous body, as a dharma, is considered to be the sole cause of the later desire, because it is acknowledged as the cause of the later desire, that is, the condition of acting together. If so, then it contradicts the previous prohibition of being a cause. If asked this way, then, the previous body, as a dharma, you being the sole cause of the later desire, was not previously prohibited, because you being the proximate cause of the later desire, was only previously excluded. If because not seeing birth without desire, so desire is the cause of birth, if following this reasoning, because not seeing desire without a body, so if considering the body also as the cause of desire, then the Lokayata, as a dharma, would himself be speaking of harming his own assertion of no prior birth, because previously it has been acknowledged that there is no prior birth, and later it is said that the previous body and desire are the cause of the later desire and body. If desire, as a dharma, is not the cause of the body, because the birth of the body and desire arise simultaneously, because you see the birth of the body, but did not see it before that. If asked this way, then the body also, as a dharma, should not be the cause of desire. Because it arises simultaneously with desire. If acknowledged, then desire is not without cause, and other causes do not arise from the body, so it is established that it arises from a similar cause. In this way, then the first desire of this life, as a dharma, should be established that a similar kind has already been established before it. Because it is equal, that is, it arises from a similar cause. The third statement is, if only desire is the cause of birth, then, the Abhidharmakosha says: "Born from ignorance, karma and desire", thus contradicting that birth is of three causes. If asked this way, then, ignorance, that is, unknowing, as a dharma, although it is also the cause of rebirth, is not mentioned here, because it is not necessarily to be reborn in samsara. Desire, as a dharma, you being said to be the cause in this case is justified, because the continuum of the aggregates of samsara is urging to be born, that is, to take, and is the immediate cause of that birth. Karma also, as a dharma, is not suitable to be said as the cause in this case
