O compassionate Dharma practitioner! In order to quell the suffering of others, you engage in the paths that are in accordance with the pacification of your own suffering. This is because you wish to show others the means of pacifying suffering without any distortion. This has pervasiveness. Because if one does not truly realize the means by which suffering is pacified, and if the cause of that means is hidden from oneself, it is difficult to explain it to others without distortion. The second (part) has three: Examine the cause and nature of what is to be abandoned, examine the antidote to destroy that cause, and explain the abandonment and antidote established by examination. The first (part) is: O compassionate Dharma practitioner! When it is established by experiencing suffering, you examine its cause with scripture and reasoning, as it is. You understand that there is a cause of suffering that arises occasionally with the characteristic of suffering itself, and by abandoning it, one is able to quell the fruit—suffering, and that this cause is without support, and the nature of actions and so on. Because you want to quell the fruit—suffering. This has pervasiveness. Because, if the cause of suffering exists as before, one will not see the fruit—suffering being quelled. The second (part) is: O compassionate Dharma practitioner! You examine the opposite of the cause of suffering, because you want to destroy the cause of suffering. When examined in this way, O compassionate Dharma practitioner! The opposite of the cause of suffering is also necessarily determined, because you realize the nature of the cause of suffering. Just as knowing the disease, one can recognize the medicine. The third (part) is: So, what is the cause of suffering and its antidote? Attachment, that is, craving, which is produced by clinging to self and what belongs to self, and which has the aggregates of the five skandhas as its object, is, O Dharma practitioner! the main cause of suffering, because it independently produces suffering. The wisdom that sees selflessness, O Dharma practitioner! is the harmer and antidote to that cause of suffering, because the clinging to self, which is the cause of suffering, and it have the same object, but the manner of clinging is opposite. The third (part) is: The means of pacifying suffering, that is, the path of seeing selflessness, is cultivated in many ways, numerously, that is, continuously, for a long time.
