Because it is not. Secondly, for the one who has self-grasping that sees self-attachment as a fault, the subject is: what will prevent attachment to the self? It cannot be prevented, because there is the cause of attachment to the self without exception, which is grasping the self as having qualities. Grasping the self as having qualities is the cause of attachment to the self, because attachment to the self itself is not due to seeing qualities, but because seeing the qualities of the self is the reason for attachment to the self. Thirdly, what fault is seen in attachment to the self? If it is said that because it is the basis of suffering, it should be abandoned. Then, for this attachment to the self, the subject is: even if it is the basis of suffering, it should not be separated from attachment, because even if it is the basis of suffering, it is completely seen as mine. For example, although the self is the basis of suffering, it is not to be separated from attachment because it is the cause of the mind that grasps the self. If it is said that the self is not established as a fault, because if there is no attachment to the self and what is mine, the self alone is not the cause of suffering. Then, for attachment to the self and so on, the subject is: like that self, it should be without fault, because if there is no self as a friend, you alone are not the cause of suffering. If that is admitted, then neither attachment to the self nor the self should be separated from attachment, because both are without fault. Secondly, there are four: one cannot abandon by meditating on suffering such as feelings, one cannot abandon by knowing that feelings and the self are different, one cannot abandon by being disgusted with suffering, refuting the contradiction with what is said to meditate on suffering. The first has two: stating the opponent's view, explaining the refutation. First, if, like abandoning a limb bitten by a snake by meditating on it as the cause of suffering, even if there is self-grasping, one can abandon attachment to the self and what is mine by meditating on them as the cause of suffering, therefore, the pervasion that there is necessarily attachment to the self is not established. Secondly, there are two: refuting the example, refuting the meaning. First, for the limb bitten by a snake, the subject is: you are not abandoned merely by meditating on suffering, but you are abandoned because the thought of what is mine is destroyed.
