There is a proof of non-(protector), because your proof, with the reasoning of compassion, has been established, and from that it has been established that the teacher, the Sugata, and the protector arise independently, therefore. Third, to establish that effort has been made after preventing non-effort, there are five: establishing the protector with the reasoning of self-power, from that, the manner of establishing the Sugata, from that, the manner of establishing the teacher, from that, the manner of establishing love, therefore, it is established that effort has been made. The first has two: showing the four truths, the teacher is shown as the protector, establishing the four truths to be shown with reason. The first is, in explaining the meaning of the protector, when explaining the path truth, or saying that the four reasons for establishment are explained in order, only establishing that there is a reason for establishment, or saying that they are explained in reverse order, it is also established that effort has been made on the reason for establishment, as it is said, the Bhagavan Dharma is the protector, because for those who seek liberation, what should be known is suffering, what should be abandoned is origin, what should be attained is cessation, what should be cultivated is the path, these four truths are shown without inversion. The reason for establishing non-inversion, this teacher, as he shows the four truths, is established by the reasoning of self-power, this is connected with the lower treatises. The second has four: establishing the self-character and the characteristic and speaking of the truth of suffering, establishing the cause of suffering and speaking of the truth of origin, establishing the cessation of suffering and speaking of the truth of cessation, establishing the antidote to the view of self and speaking of the truth of the path. The first has two: establishing the self-character as cyclic existence, establishing the characteristic as impermanence, etc. The first has three: showing suffering as cyclic existence, establishing with reason that there is cyclic existence, if there is no cyclic existence, it is too much. The first is, the aggregates of the near-taking of the cyclic existence of the three, afflictions, karma, and ripening, without interruption, are the truth of suffering, because they are conditioned phenomena that suffer directly or indirectly from the three sufferings. The second has two: establishing with the sign of clarity from habituation, establishing with the sign of the same kind of near-taking. The first has two: establishing the reason, refuting the argument. The first is, the nihilist says, the cyclic existence is not reasonable, because the previous

If asked: Because there is no habituation. Answer: A newly born sentient being, the characteristic is, because habituation, etc., precedes (him) arising, therefore, in his own mind-stream, attachment, etc., clearly arise. Pervasion: Because in this life, from the previous habituation of attachment, etc., itself, later, attachment, etc., are clearly seen. The second (part) has three (parts): Refuting that attachment, etc., arise without a cause; refuting that they arise from dissimilar (things); therefore, it is established that similar things are the cause. The first (part) is: If attachment, etc., do not arise from habituation, then is it without a cause or is there another cause? If it is like the first case, attachment, etc., the characteristic is, it is not a random causelessness, because sometimes it is seen to arise. Pervasion: If it is without a cause, then it contradicts sometimes arising. The second (part) has two (parts): Refuting that it arises from the cause of disease; refuting that it arises from the cause of (four great) elements. The first (part) has four (parts): Because there is no pervasion, it is not a result; because there is no concomitance, it is not a result; if it is a result, then it is too extreme; refuting the argument that is the same as oneself. The first (part) is: Although attachment, etc., are not without a cause, they do not arise from habituation, if asked: Because from wind, bile, and phlegm, the three, in sequence, ignorance, hatred, and desire, the three, clearly arise. Ignorance, etc., the characteristic is, are not the qualities of the results of wind, etc., respectively, and bile and phlegm, because there is confusion about the pervasion of these three in sequence, that is, seeing that those with a lot of phlegm and no bile have great hatred, etc. If you say: At that time, because the nature of bile is mixed in the phlegm, there is no fault of confusing hatred with bile. Then, that which has phlegm, the characteristic is, why is it not seen that the qualities of bile, that is, besides hatred, there are also yellow skin and foul smell, etc.? It will definitely be seen, because its cause, bile, has unimpeded power. If you say: Each of wind, bile, and phlegm can produce all three poisons (afflictions). Ignorance, etc., the characteristic is, are not the qualities of the results of all wind, etc., if they are, then all bodies with the same phlegm, the characteristic is, must be the same desire, because they have the same phlegm, so there will be such a fault. If you say: Although the cause, the four great elements, are the same, the results, such as the bodies of sentient beings, are not the same, similarly, although the cause, phlegm, is the same, the result, desire, is not the same, so there is no fault.
