If it is said that rain will not fall, then, as the subject of the thesis, conceptual mind, in situations such as the movement of breath, even if one part of the breath is missing, you will not arise, because the complete set of breath components is your substantial cause. If it is said that the way the components of breath exist is the cause of mind, then, as the subject of the thesis, consciousness, due to the increase or decrease of breath, you will also have differences of increase or decrease, because the strength or weakness of breath is your immediate cause. It is pervasive: Whatever effect does not produce differences of increase or decrease from the differences of increase or decrease of a certain cause, that is not its effect. Third, refuting the fault of conformity with oneself is: If it is said that you are also the same as when multiple conceptualizations arise simultaneously in one person, then, as the subject of the thesis, the conceptual mind with its object, the former one is the cause of the latter one, and not multiple similar ones arise simultaneously, because it requires a definite ability to generate each subsequent similar one. The reason is established, because if the conceptual mind of consciousness becomes attached to other things such as the lute, then it will be seen that it does not grasp other things such as form even when they are close, by losing the ability to grasp form etc. at that moment. If it is said that in the womb etc., mind arises simultaneously from the body at first, and later it is certain that mind arises from its own previous similar one to produce each subsequent similar one, so it is the same. Then, as the subject of the thesis, the body, why does your ability to generate mind regress later? It should not regress. Because even later, it is no different from the body that generated mind before. Third, there are two ways to refute the erroneous debate about that: the debate and the answer. The first is: If it is said that the body regresses at the time of death, then, as the subject of the thesis, it will arise that mind exists alone, because mind exists and it does not depend on the body. The second has three parts: Explaining the two causes of the future birth, refuting the proof of no connection, and establishing the proof of a reasonable connection. The first is: O possessor of a body, there is no fault in saying that mind exists alone after death, if the cause of the future body obtains the function of generating the future body from the body at the time of death.

For the sake of the body in the next life, if the mind at the time of death is not a cause for the continuation of consciousness, nor a limb as a co-operative condition, then, even if only consciousness exists alone after death, the mind at the time of death will become a co-operative condition for the body of the next life. So, what is the immediate cause of the body in the next life? Other bodies, that is, the body of the next life, have characteristics. You have an immediate cause, because the five faculties at the time of death in this life are the very immediate cause of producing you. Here, most agree that if it is not a limb, it is like being born from desire into the formless realm. If it is a limb, then the reason is not established, just as being born from desire into desire, so the answer of distinguishing in this way is unreasonable. Because in the state of the two absorptions, the continuity of consciousness is cut off, and there is absolutely no form in the formless realm, this is the view of the Vaibhashikas, not the view of the Sautrantikas. The former believes that the meaning of the immediately preceding condition is that other things of the same kind as oneself are not interrupted, but not that other dharmas are not interrupted. The latter considers it to be the cause of the object. The Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas have a very extensive debate on the question of whether or not there is form in the formless realm, which is explained in the commentary on the Abhidharmakosha. Explaining the meaning of the text as a distinguishing answer is also not in accordance with the literal meaning, because it is not related to "the five faculties of this life." If it is said that similar ones are not necessarily immediately preceding conditions, then this is the same as not being a distinguishing answer. The five faculties of this life become the cause of the form of beings in the formless realm, also through the imprints left by them, becoming the subtle form on which consciousness depends, but not that the five faculties actually exist, because this would lead to the fault of beings in the formless realm having an intermediate state. The intention of the Ornament Maker and his followers in explaining imprints as the cause is also the same. No one like this who speaks the truth has appeared here in the Land of Snows (Tibet). The second point is: the body and mind at the time of death have characteristics. The body and mind are not the cause and condition of the next life, because it is not observed there. The body of the next life
