What further reason is there to see that wisdom is capable of connecting previous and subsequent lives? And for what reason is it assumed that ordinary people are unable to connect at the time of death, since the reason is the same? The ancients took the first verse as a summary statement, and then in the detailed explanation said, "If there is no previous life, then it is too extreme. The existence of a future life can be proven by reason," etc. They made such divisions without distinguishing that in this context of cultivating familiarity with the object of compassion, the main point is to prove the existence of a future life; and below, in proving that the basis of the truth of suffering—the aggregates of appropriation—is the nature of cyclic existence, the main point is to prove the existence of a previous life. They also did not understand the way the scriptures are organized, i.e., where the words "warmth and moisture," etc., are used to explain in detail "too extreme," and where the words "final consciousness," etc., are used to explain connection in detail. The second part has two points: explaining in detail the reasoning of being too extreme, and explaining in detail that there is no contradiction in connection. The first point has three parts: if it arises from a material body, it is too extreme; if it arises from a body with senses, it is too extreme; if it arises from a permanent body, it is too extreme. The first point is: if it is said that consciousness arises from stones, etc., then there is no fault of being too extreme, because some elements are the seeds of consciousness, etc., and some are not. If this is said, then all elements should become the self-nature of the seeds of consciousness, etc. If other conditions are complete, then in any place, warmth and moisture, etc., will not become a place where beings are born. Therefore, all earth, etc., will become the self-nature of the seeds of consciousness, etc. Therefore, if the senses, etc., do not depend on the previous similar kind, but are produced by the elements, then how is it that one element is completely transformed like the senses, etc., and all elements are transformed? Because there is no reason to distinguish. The second point has three parts: if refuted, then causality itself is established; refuting the contradiction with scripture; if proven by reason, then it contradicts the commitment. The first point is: if it is assumed that the body is the actual support of consciousness, then it must be assumed that the body with senses is the actual support of consciousness. If this is the case, then consciousness, having the nature of phenomena, directly depends on the eyes, etc., the senses.

It is not so, because if each of the senses such as the eyes is harmed by adverse conditions, it does not actually harm you. Those senses such as the eyes are also subjects, dependent on your mind, because if this mind is changed by sorrow and so on, then you are seen as changed, because the senses depend on the mind. Sentient beings are subjects, your later senses arise from your previous mind, because the basis on which your later mind dwells is precisely dependent on the previous mind, and some of the actions of the previous mind are the cause of the later senses. Therefore, if there is a producer of later senses like that, which depends on the previous mind, then later, that is, at the time of death, it is a subject, the arising of senses from the mind will change here, because its causes and conditions are complete and without obstacles. In the Treatise on Reasoning it is said: "When causes and conditions are complete and without obstacles, the endless future is accomplished by its signs." This is the meaning here. Second, if someone asks: Then, are the body and mind mutually compliant, does this contradict the scripture that says so? Such scriptures are subjects, they do not say that the mind directly depends on the body, because the body helps the body's consciousness, and that body's consciousness helps the mind, therefore the mind is said to depend on the body through the body. Third, if it is said that the senses are the direct basis of the mind, because without the senses the mind cannot arise. Then, the mind is a subject, you should also be the direct basis of the senses. Because without you, the senses will not arise. If you admit that, then both wisdom and the senses are subjects, and after death they should be the fruit of mutual causes, because they are mutual causes at the time of death. The third point is divided into two parts: refuting the extremely extreme reasoning, and refuting by admitting mistakes and self-contradictions. First, if the materialists admit that the mind arises from the permanent body, then the body is a subject, and the mind will not arise from you in sequence, because you are permanent and not sequential. Second, if it is said that the pervasion is not established, because the body is permanent, it depends on conditions to produce the mind in sequence. Then, the body is a subject, and it should not depend on conditions, conditions
