In order to avoid someone saying that practicing Śamatha-vipassanā contradicts the Buddha's teaching of practicing suffering, if contemplating the aggregates, etc., as suffering and generating aversion to suffering is not detachment, then this contradicts the sutra's statement that suffering should be practiced, if someone thinks this way. O Blessed One, the Dharma you speak of is not said to be practiced with suffering in mind, but with the suffering of conditioned existence in mind. Our suffering of conditioned existence is only the contaminated aggregates arising from existence, which is the main factor in the origin of suffering, as explained in the Samudaya-satya. It is not merely the suffering of suffering. Here, the previous view that things are momentary arising and ceasing, arising from causes and conditions, and therefore subject to causes, so they are said to be suffering, is a view that does not distinguish between tenets. Because in the Sautrāntika school, even uncontaminated conditioned phenomena are also subject to causes. Practicing the suffering of conditioned existence, you should know, is not something you can be liberated from by yourself. It is only the basis for your realization of the view of selflessness that is different in entity from others. Only through the view of emptiness that realizes the selflessness that is different in entity from others can liberation be attained. The remaining practices, such as practicing impermanence, suffering, etc., are all for the purpose of generating the view of realizing emptiness. Therefore, the Blessed One also said that from realizing impermanence, one realizes suffering, and from realizing suffering, one realizes selflessness. As it says in the sutra: 'Monks, do you see, is form permanent or impermanent?' 'Venerable, it is impermanent.' 'Whatever is impermanent, is it happiness or suffering?' 'Venerable, it is suffering.' 'Whatever is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, is it reasonable to regard these as 'This is me, this is mine, this is my self'?' 'Venerable, that is not reasonable.' Third, if there is no detachment, one will wander in samsara, which is divided into two situations: it reveals that those with three conditions are samsaric beings, and if these three conditions are not met, it would be too absolute. The first situation is: the Dharma that believes 'I am suffering' and has self-grasping is called a samsaric being and cannot attain liberation because it has not been liberated from afflictions and karma.

It is because of attachment to self, not being free from self, and being attached to the existence of self, relying on all actions of creating karma for the sake of obtaining self. Second, if someone says that when liberation is attained, because there is no attachment to the existence of self, therefore there is no separation from attachment, this statement is not established. Then, at the time of attaining liberation, the enjoyer of what you call "my existence" also does not exist, because "my existence" itself is not desired, it is discarded. If you admit this, then at the time of attaining liberation, the "self" that you desire also does not exist, because there is no agent and no enjoyer. This is because you have already admitted such a universal principle, and you consider "self" to be characterized by agency and enjoyment. Third, therefore, the instruction to uproot is: a person who desires liberation should, through meditating on selflessness, uproot from the very root the view of the aggregates, which arises from the seed of the same kind with a beginningless cause. Because it has been explained that anyone seeking liberation, if they cannot realize selflessness, but only practice suffering, etc., will not be able to be liberated from samsara. Second, there are three aspects to the ability to abandon craving by meditating on selflessness: refuting the view that rituals are an effective antidote; revealing that rituals are not an effective antidote; therefore, clarifying that the correct view is the antidote. The first aspect has three contents: refuting the view that the rituals of Ishvara are an effective antidote; refuting the view that reciting mantras is an effective antidote; refuting the view that serving the five fires is an effective antidote. First, if someone says that even if the view of self is not uprooted from the root, liberation can be attained by receiving the empowerment of Ishvara, because the scriptures of Ishvara say so. Then, for those who have realization, merely because the scriptures of Ishvara say so, to say that the rituals of Ishvara can bring liberation does not completely satisfy you. Because you do not see the reason why the scriptures of Ishvara express the same thing as what you believe in. Second, if someone says that reciting the mantras spoken in the scriptures of Ishvara can liberate from samsara, because reciting in this way prevents seeds from producing sprouts. Then, the ritual you see where reciting mantras prevents seeds from producing sprouts does not prove that a person will not produce a future existence.
