Therefore, one should not be attached, nor should one abandon. Because both of these are without fault. The second part has four points: one cannot abandon by meditating on suffering, one cannot abandon by knowing the difference between the lord and the self, one cannot abandon by being disgusted with suffering, and refuting what contradicts the stated practice of meditating on suffering. The first part has two points: stating the view, and explaining the refutation. The first point: If, like abandoning a limb bitten by a snake by meditating on it as the cause of suffering, even if there is self-grasping, one can abandon attachment to self and what is mine by meditating on them as the cause of suffering, then the statement that one must be attached to self is not established. The second part has two points: refuting the analogy, and refuting the meaning. The first point: This limb bitten by a snake is the subject. You are not abandoned solely by meditating on suffering, but because you are abandoned by destroying the thought of what is mine, and conversely, if there is a thought of what is mine, you are not abandoned. The second point has seven points: if there is grasping at what is mine, it is impossible to abandon; if one abandons what is mine, there is no nature of what is mine; if there is self-grasping, attachment to what is mine will arise; the effort of meditating on suffering will become meaningless; if I am without fault, there is no object of attachment and abandonment; merely knowing the fault cannot abandon attachment; and because there is no harm to the cause, it cannot be abandoned. The first part has two points: if there is grasping at what is mine, there is no attachment and abandonment; refuting the proof of destroying grasping at what is mine. The first point: The one who has self-grasping, knowing that what is mine is a fault, is the subject. From where does the attachment and abandonment of that what is mine come, it is impossible. Because in what way can one prevent the grasping of self in what is mine, it is impossible to prevent. Because what is mine, such as the senses, is the basis of enjoyment, and is considered to be a factor that benefits oneself. This is universal, because for hair, nails, etc. that fall off from the body, since they are not considered to be factors that benefit oneself, a mind of disgust will arise, while for hair, etc. that are on the body of others, since they are considered to be factors that benefit oneself, a mind with attachment will arise, all of which is manifestly established. The second part has two points: refuting abandonment through meditating on suffering, and refuting abandonment through generating suffering. The first point: If attachment to self, etc.

If it is said that because of contemplating suffering, one abandons the ego-grasping towards it, then the reason "by what means is one's own mind transformed" is not established. Attachment to self, etc., is the subject. Even if it has been seen as suffering, it is impossible to abandon the ego-grasping, because the cause for the arising of ego-grasping in you is due to the existence of a connection of union with self, etc. Even if that connection has been seen as suffering, it still remains in its previous state. The reason is admitted. This is a refutation of the Vaisheshika school. The Samkhya school believes that the two, the self as the object of grasping and the subject of grasping, are one, and therefore ego-grasping arises towards it, and they also believe that oneness is also a composite. This is not reasonable. My form, etc., is the subject. It is impossible for you to generate ego-grasping, because there is no connection of union between you and me, and there is no cognition of considering form, etc., as one. It cannot be thought so, because seeing actions that benefit me exists in all ego-grasping of external objects. The second case is that a person who has attained liberation will not generate ego-grasping towards the senses, etc., and will abandon ego-grasping, because the senses, etc., are regarded as the cause of producing suffering. For example, a finger bitten by a poisonous snake. Therefore, if it is said that the reason "by what means is one's own mind transformed" is not established. The senses, etc., are the subject. It is not entirely seen as the cause of producing suffering, because it may also be seen as the cause of some temporary happiness. If it is said that one abandons merely because the senses, etc., are mostly seen as the cause of producing suffering, just as one abandons mostly poisonous food because it is seen as the cause of producing suffering, then both the analogy and the meaning are not established. Like this, a person who has the thought of acceptance and rejection, if he obtains special food, because he is attached to its happiness, he will abandon the poisonous food that contradicts it. Because he craves special happiness, he completely abandons the slight happiness. A person who does not have the thought of acceptance and rejection, because he is attached to self, will also accept poisonous food, etc., as he obtains it, because he does not have the thought of acceptance and rejection, and he is attached to the happiness of just food. For example,
