It is the cause of that. The first is that suffering is not without cause, nor is it caused by permanence. Therefore, the aggregation of afflictions, named as the origin, the desire for existence that encompasses body, enjoyment, and desire, is the cause of suffering. Why? Taking humans as an example, the differences in the objects of sentient beings, namely, whatever is slightly grasped, that is, taking all those objects, the thought of wanting to obtain them, is done by desire. If the desire for existence is the cause of suffering, then, in brief, what is the noble truth of the origin of suffering? If it is this desire, which has the nature of arising again, accompanied by the desire for joy, with the aspect of manifesting joy in this and that, such as desire for desire, desire for existence, and fear of destruction? Thus, if all three desires are said to be the cause, is it not contradictory? It is not contradictory, for what is said in this way is considered to be the desire for existence. Why? Furthermore, sentient beings desire to obtain happiness and want to abandon suffering. Therefore, the desires that engage in acceptance and rejection, in that order, are said to be desire for desire and fear of destruction. This is because the difference between general and specific is present. This is the intention of the gods. Shakya, who strives for the sake of the desire realm, is desire for desire, and who strives for the sake of the two upper realms is desire for existence, and who wants to abandon suffering is fear of destruction. Although it is said in this way, it is mixed with Abhidharma and does not appear to be the meaning of this treatise. Therefore, ordinary beings, possessors of Dharma, those three desires are existence, that is, the basis for birth in samsara. Because of the desire for self-attachment as the cause, one perceives non-blissful contaminated bliss as bliss, and desiring bliss, one intensely engages in and takes all good and bad objects. Therefore. The second has two parts: the actual and the refutation of disputes. The first is that since liberation from attachment does not see birth, therefore, attachment is the cause of birth, as said by the teachers. The teacher Vasubandhu, why? Because a person free from desire has not been seen to be born, therefore, birth has the characteristic of being caused by desire, as he said. The second is that the Lokayata says, "If so, can the body also give rise to desire?"

If it is said that it is the same because attachment is not seen to arise without a body. Then, the former body has the characteristic of being considered merely the cause of the later attachment, because it is acknowledged as the cause of the later attachment, that is, the concurrent cause. If it is said, then it contradicts the previous prohibition of being a cause. Then, the former body has the characteristic that you are not previously prohibited from being merely the cause of the later attachment, but it is only that you were previously excluded from being the immediate cause of the later attachment. If, because the birth of detachment is not seen, attachment is the cause of birth, if one follows this line of reasoning, since attachment is not seen without a body, if one also considers the body to be the cause of attachment, then the Lokayata (materialist) has the characteristic of contradicting their own assertion that birth has no before or after, because they previously asserted that birth has no before or after, and later stated that the former body and attachment are the cause of the later attachment and body. If it is said that attachment has the characteristic of not being the cause of the body, because it arises simultaneously with the birth of the body, because you see the birth of the body, but have not seen it before that. Then, the body also has the characteristic of not being the cause of attachment. Because it arises together with attachment. If it is admitted, then attachment is not without a cause, nor does it arise from another cause, the body, therefore it is established that it arises from a cause of the same kind. In this way, the first attachment of this life has the characteristic of being established as having the same kind before itself. Because it is equal, that is, it arises from a cause of the same kind. Third, if craving alone is the cause of birth, then the Treasury of Knowledge says that birth has three causes, that is, it arises from ignorance, karma, and craving, which contradicts this. Ignorance, that is, ignorance has the characteristic that although it is also the cause of rebirth, it is not mentioned here, because it is not certain to project rebirth. Craving has the characteristic that you are said to be the cause in this case for a reason, because it is the impeller of projecting, that is, taking the continuum of aggregates of rebirth, and it is the immediate cause of birth. Karma also has the characteristic of not being appropriate to be said to be the cause in this case, because even if there is karma, if it lacks the moisture of craving, it is not certain that there will be birth. Therefore, these texts generally establish that suffering exists together with its cause, and
