Ro. Fourth, the way in which protection arises from this is: Blessed One, Dharma! As stated in the praise of offerings in the Sutra, it is the protector, because one has personally seen and experienced the path, and by means of truthfully proclaiming it, one protects sentient beings from suffering. How does one proclaim it truthfully? Blessed One, Dharma! One does not lie, that is, one does not proclaim the path in a reversed manner, because there is no result in proclaiming it that way, that is, there is no need. If one thinks that one proclaims it in a reversed manner because one has no compassion, then, Blessed One, Dharma! One does not proclaim it in a reversed manner because one has no compassion, because one possesses great compassion, because all actions of body, speech, and mind are for the sake of others, and one has repeatedly practiced them for countless eons. Fifth, therefore, the establishment of having a valid proof is established: Blessed One, Dharma! You have a valid proof of being a reliable person, because your valid proof—compassion—has already been proven by reason, and from that it has already been proven that the teacher, the Sugata, and the protector arise independently. Third, from not making effort and preventing, and then establishing effort, there are five points: Establishing the protector by direct perception and reason. The way in which the Sugata is established from that. The way in which the teacher is established from that. The way in which compassion is established from that. Therefore, it is established that effort has been made. The first point has two: Showing the four truths is the protector. Establishing the four truths to be shown by reason. The first point is: The meaning of the protector lies in proclaiming the truth of the path. In the explanation, starting from "or," or in other words, by explaining the four valid proofs in a forward direction, only the possession of a valid proof is established. Starting from "or," by explaining in a reverse direction, the effort on the valid proof is also established, that is, Blessed One, Dharma! is the protector, because for those seeking liberation, what is to be known is suffering, what is to be abandoned is origin, what is to be attained is cessation, and what is to be cultivated is the path, because one truthfully proclaims these four truths. The valid proof of truthfully proclaiming, how does this teacher proclaim the four truths, just as it is established by direct perception and reason, this should be combined with the following treatises. The second point has four: By establishing the basis and characteristics, to explain the truth of suffering. Suffering is established together with its causes.

Therefore, the origin of suffering is explained. By proving the cessation of suffering, the truth of cessation is explained. By proving the antidote to the view of self, the truth of the path is explained. The first part has two points: establishing the basis as the nature of samsara. Establishing the characteristics of impermanence, etc. The first part has three points: showing that suffering is the nature of samsara. Proving the existence of samsara through reasoning. If there is no samsara, there would be an extreme consequence. The first point is: afflictions, karma, and vipaka, these three without interval become the aggregates of clinging that are the cause of samsara, are the truth of suffering, because through the three sufferings, directly or indirectly, they become conditioned phenomena of suffering. The second part has two points: proving through the sign of clarity from habituation. Proving through the sign of the similar cause of clinging. The first part has two points: establishing the reason. Refuting the argument. The first point is: the nihilist says that the so-called samsara is unreasonable because there is no past or future life. If so, then the newborn child has habituation preceding it, because greed, etc., clearly arise in their own continuum. The pervasion is established, because in this life, from the previous habituation of greed, etc., later greed, etc., are clearly seen. The second part has three points: refuting the causeless arising of greed, etc. Refuting arising from dissimilar causes. Therefore, it is established that similar causes are the cause. The first point is: if greed, etc., do not arise from habituation, then is it causeless or is there another cause? If it is like the first case, then greed, etc., are not arbitrary causelessness, because they are sometimes seen to arise. The pervasion is established, because if it is causeless, it contradicts arising sometimes. The second part has two points: refuting arising from the cause of disease. Refuting arising from the cause of the elements. The first part has four points: because there is no pervasion, it is not a result. Because there is no co-occurrence, it is not a result. If it is a result, there would be an extreme consequence. Refuting the argument that is the same as oneself. The first point is: greed, etc., are not causeless, but they do not arise from habituation, because from wind, bile, and phlegm, ignorance, hatred, and desire clearly arise in sequence. If so, then ignorance, etc., are not the result of wind, etc., bile and phlegm in sequence, because there is confusion of pervasion in those three in sequence, because there is more phlegm and no bile.
