Furthermore, all parts of the body other than the face are subjects. If one part, like the face, is altered with paint, then you too should be altered with paint, or if one part is not altered, then you too should be understood as not altered, which is necessarily the case. Because you are not an indivisible single entity with the face. Therefore, the body composed of many particles is a subject. It is merely a collection of many particles, not existing as a single entity, because it has many attributes such as movement and non-movement. The second part has two aspects: stating an extreme inference, and explaining the refutation of it. The first is: The Vaisheshika says, even though bodies and pots, etc., which have limbs, do not exist as a single entity but merely as many atoms, bodies and pots, etc., are subjects. They should not be cognized by sensory consciousness, nor should they be able to obstruct or obscure. Because they are no different from the previous atoms that are beyond the scope of sensory consciousness and cannot obstruct or obscure, they are exactly the same. And later, they are also the same as the previous ultimate atoms. Just like the atoms when the gross object was not yet formed. If so, the second part has two aspects: the reason that there is no difference in atoms is not established, and if it is established, then it is the same in the view of others as well. The first is, bodies, etc., are subjects. Even though you are an atom, it is not established that you are the same as the previous atom that is beyond the senses. Because the previous atom combined with other atoms, your state was born, therefore you are different from the previous one. The atoms with special characteristics, such as bodies, etc., are subjects. In reality, even though you are an atom, you are not called an atom. Because even though you are an atom, you are its object by creating an image in sensory consciousness. This is said in the auto-commentary of the Treasury of Reasoning: Even though mental direct perception is valid, it cannot derive certainty from itself, so it does not obtain the name of validity. For example, the object of sensory consciousness is the ultimate atom, but since it does not appear there, it is not considered an object. Nowadays, most people think that atoms are not the object of sensory consciousness, which is the view of this text, because they have not turned their minds to the tenets of the Sautrantika school explained in the Seven Treatises. The Sautrantikas believe that atoms have no parts in direction and that consciousness has no parts in previous and subsequent moments, and that these are truly existent. And they believe that the direct perception of meaning and self-awareness that hold these are not mistaken.

It is held that all destruction and continuity are conventional truths, and that the conceptualization that clings to them is mistaken. Therefore, since many atoms do not compose a single gross substance, a gross object that is different from atoms does not exist in reality. Sense consciousness does not apprehend (unaggregated) atoms, but only the many atoms that are in contact with each other are apprehended by sense consciousness, because they are the cause of generating appearances in sense consciousness. The statement that sense consciousness does not apprehend atoms refers to individual atoms that are not in contact with each other, which is the definitive view of the Sutra and Compendium on Valid Cognition, without any mistake. Therefore, in this system, there are three causal sequences in the apprehension of external objects by sense consciousness: the cause that generates the appearance, the appearance generated by it, and the object of ascertainment drawn by it. The first is the special atoms that are in contact with each other. The second is the gross appearance that appears in sense consciousness at its own time. The third is the exclusion of others, which is the appearance that appears as a single mass in subsequent conceptualization, and is falsely attributed to being an external object. The first is the external object, the second is the nature of sense consciousness itself, so it is not gross, and the third is what is falsely attributed to being gross. Although the appearance-generating factor is atoms, the Mind-Only school asks the Sutra school, "By what means do those atoms cause such a gross appearance to arise in sense consciousness?" This is also the key to revealing their self-contradiction. Here, in Jamyang Shaypa's commentary, it says that although no Buddhist school has ever asserted that there is a self-characterized entity other than atoms, they have not even bothered to explain the tenets of the seven treatises, yet those Tibetan logicians who claim to be experts in the seven treatises, even without consulting each other, agree to deny the name of the whole that is different from its parts, and they believe that atoms cannot be apprehended by sense consciousness and cannot obstruct, but the gross object composed of them and different from them exists in reality. It can obstruct and be apprehended by sense consciousness, and although it cannot be understood by weighing the weight of the constituent atoms, the true weight of the gross object composed of them can be understood by weighing. This is actually how the Vaisheshika school asserts the form and weight of the whole composed of parts.
