Because it is dependent on other powers of cause. The pervasion, the one who meditates on the suffering of conditioning, is the subject. You are not liberated by this alone, because you are merely the basis for the view of realizing the selflessness that is different in meaning and essence, and because liberation comes from the view of realizing the emptiness of the self that is different in meaning and essence. The remaining meditations, such as meditating on impermanence and suffering, are for the purpose of generating the view of realizing emptiness, therefore, the Bhagavan also said that from realizing impermanence, one realizes suffering, and from realizing suffering, one realizes selflessness. As it is said: Monks, for example, is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable, it is impermanent. Whatever is impermanent, is it happiness or suffering? Venerable, it is suffering. Whatever is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, is it reasonable to regard it as 'This is me,' 'This is mine,' 'This is my self'? Venerable, it is not. So it is said. Third, if not free from attachment, then wandering in samsara has two aspects: showing the three-fold samsaric being, if not three-fold, then it is too extreme. First, the one who has self-grasping, knowing 'mine' as suffering, is the subject. It is not the attainment of liberation by the one called samsaric being, because it is not like that which is liberated from afflictions and karma, because it is not free from attachment to self, and has the desire for the existence of 'mine,' and relies on all the actions of accumulating karma for the sake of obtaining 'mine.' Second, if at the time of attaining liberation, there is no attachment to 'mine,' then the statement 'not free from attachment' is not established, if asked thus, at the time of attaining liberation, is the subject. There is also no eater of that 'mine,' because 'mine' itself is not desired, it is abandoned. If you accept, then at the time of attaining liberation, that self that you accept also does not exist, because there is no agent and no enjoyer. The pervasion is accepted, because I accept that self is the nature of being an agent and an enjoyer. Third, therefore, the advice to uproot the root is: the person who desires liberation, is the subject. The view of the perishable collection that arises from the seed of the same kind of previous existence, which has a beginningless cause, through the door of meditating on selflessness.

Therefore, it is imperative to eradicate the view of self from its very root. Anyone seeking liberation who does not realize selflessness and only practices suffering, etc., will not be able to be liberated from samsara. Therefore, secondly, there are three aspects to the ability to abandon craving through the practice of selflessness: refuting the argument that rituals are an effective antidote; refuting the argument that rituals are not an effective antidote; therefore, clarifying that the correct view is the antidote. The first aspect has three parts: refuting that the ritual of empowerment is an effective antidote; refuting that consecration with mantras is an effective antidote; refuting that serving the five fires is an effective antidote. First, if one can be liberated by receiving the empowerment of Ishvara even without eradicating the view of self from its root, because it is said so in the scriptures of Ishvara. Then, for those who have realization, just because it is said so in the scriptures of Ishvara, to say that the ritual of empowerment can liberate, you will not be completely satisfied, because you do not see the reason why the scriptures of Ishvara speak of the same entity as the things you believe in. Second, if one can be liberated from samsara by consecration with mantras as described in the scriptures of Ishvara, because after such consecration, the seed will not produce a sprout. Then, the ritual of consecrating a seed with mantras so that it does not produce a sprout is considered an effective ritual, but it does not prove that a person will not be reborn. If it could prove it, then a person being anointed with sesame oil, burned by fire, cooked, etc., should also be able to be liberated from samsara, because a seed treated in this way will not produce a sprout, and this would be a fault. Third, serving the five fires can liberate from rebirth, because serving the five fires makes a person's body lighter than before, thus eliminating sins. Then, the person who serves the five fires, your body is heavier before and lighter later, so it is not that sins have been cleared. The reason why your body is heavy is that the elements of earth and water have not disappeared, so it is heavier before and lighter later, not because sins are heavy, because sins are not corporeal. The second aspect has four parts: rituals do not diminish the cause of rebirth; refuting the argument that it diminishes; refuting the argument that it does not diminish; I also.
