Now, like the sharpness of thorns and so on, and the truth of suffering, these are also conditioned phenomena. Because there is a cause, that is, there exists a prior other thing as the basis for its subsequent change. This is universally applicable, because any prior other thing exists, subsequent other things arise dependent on it, or prior other things change, even when it disappears, subsequent things also change accordingly, this basis of subsequent change is considered the cause of the subsequent thing. If it is said that the cause of the objective condition of eye consciousness, that is, touch, is a conditioned phenomenon. Then, it is the cause of eye consciousness, because it is a conditioned phenomenon, the basis of the subsequent change of eye consciousness. Then, touch, as the cause of the objective condition of eye consciousness, is the indirect cause of seeing, that is, eye consciousness, because it is the cause of the form that is the objective condition of eye consciousness. Second, in this way, suffering is proven to have a cause, and it does not arise from causes of different kinds. For example, suffering is not produced from permanent things such as Ishvara and the Lord, because in general, permanent things are excluded as the possibility of being a cause, because permanent things do not have the ability to produce results. The third part has three points: showing that craving is the main factor; quoting scriptures as proof; only explaining craving as the cause. The first point is that because suffering is not without a cause, nor is it caused by permanent things, therefore, craving for body, enjoyment, and desire, which is called the arising of afflictions and is composed of existence, is the cause of suffering. Because, taking humans as an example, the attachment of beings to objects, that is, acceptance, is all caused by the thought of wanting to obtain that object, that is, craving. If it is said that desire for existence is the cause of suffering, then in the sutra, what is the noble truth of the arising of suffering? It is this craving, which leads to rebirth, accompanied by joy and desire, full of joy in things, such as desire craving, existence craving, and non-existence craving, thus stating that all three cravings are the cause, is this not a contradiction? This is not a contradiction, because as mentioned above, this is existence craving.

I think that because all sentient beings want to attain happiness and want to abandon suffering, the craving that arises from engaging in what to take and what to abandon is what is said to be desire-craving and fear-craving, respectively. I think this is the difference between the general and the specific. This is the intention of the gods. Shakyamuni said that seeking the desire realm is desire-craving, seeking the two upper realms is existence-craving, and wanting to abandon suffering is fear-craving, but this is mixed with the Abhidharma and does not conform to the meaning of this treatise. Therefore, ordinary people, these three cravings are the basis of existence, the basis of samsara, because they are caused by craving for self-attachment, considering impure happiness that is not happiness as happiness, and because of craving for happiness, they strongly cling to and acquire all good and bad objects. The second part is divided into two points: the main text and refuting arguments. The first point is: Because the birth of those without attachment is not seen, the teachers say that attachment is the cause of birth. The teacher Vasubandhu said: Because the birth of a person who is free from desire is not seen, therefore, birth is caused by desire. The second point is: The Lokayata says: Then the body will also produce desire, because desire without a body is not seen, so it is the same. The answer is: The previous body is considered to be the cause of the later desire, because it is admitted that the cause of the later desire is the co-emergent condition. If so, then it contradicts the previous prohibition of being the cause. The answer is: The previous body, you are considered to be the cause of the later desire, this was not previously prohibited, because previously it was only excluded that you are the immediate cause of the later desire. If, because the birth of those without attachment is not seen, desire is the cause of birth, if you follow this reasoning, because desire without a body is not seen, so if you think that the body is also the cause of desire, then the Lokayata, you will be saying something that harms your own assertion of birth without previous and subsequent lives, because previously you have admitted that there is no birth with previous and subsequent lives, and later you say that the previous body and desire are the cause of the later desire and body.
