Because if you exist, there is breath, and that breath becomes dependent on you, since exhaling and inhaling are not the result of your effort, but from what do they arise? Furthermore, the mind, having the property of dharma, because of the flourishing and decline of breath, you will also attain flourishing and decline, since you are a thing born from the proximate cause of breath. Also, for those who consider the body to be the substantial cause of the mind, and who believe that a corpse lacks the causal condition of the mind, which is breath, for them, the corpse, having the property of dharma, should have breath, because the substantial cause of breath, the body, exists; this inference is the same. If you believe that the previous moment of mind is the cause of the subsequent moment of mind, then the corpse should also have mind. If the cause of mind is mind, then the corpse, having the property of dharma, should have mind, because the cause of mind is complete; this inference is not the same, because for this body, the impeller that causes the mind to abide, which is the karma of previous lives, is also considered to be the cause of the mind abiding in the body, so the corpse does not possess the cause of the mind abiding. The third part has three points: stating the intention, pointing out the harm, refuting the fault of relying on analogy, and summarizing and showing the various aspects of reason. The first point is: if saplings, etc., are the cause of a lamp, but if there is an opposing condition such as moisture, the lamp will not arise; similarly, although the body is the substantial cause of the mind, the corpse, which is discordant due to the fault of illness, i.e., causing an opposing condition, is not the cause of the mind, so there is no fault of the corpse having mind. If one dies from poisoning, etc., when the fault of the poisoning, etc., is diminished, i.e., reversed, having the property of dharma, it should become alive again, because there is no opposing condition of being alive, which is illness, and the substantial cause of being alive, the body, is complete. The second point is: if it is not pervasive, just as after wood is burned, the fire can reverse, but the change of the wood, such as becoming ashes, etc., will not reverse back to wood, similarly, at the time of death, even if the cause of the mind's change, such as poisoning, etc., reverses, the mind will not reverse. The change of body and mind caused by poisoning, etc., having the property of dharma, is not like wood burning and being unrecoverable, because there is a means of recovery, i.e., a method.

There is pervasiveness, because there are two causes that produce change. Some things, like the change of wood after being burned by fire, are caused by the cause of change to produce a change that does not return in some cases. Some things, like the change of gold after being burned by fire, are caused by the cause of change to produce a reversible change. Thus, the first of the two irreversible changes, even if small, will not return; the second is whatever has been changed to be reversible, and that will happen again, just as the change of melting gold will become solid again. If someone asks: Then, does this contradict the statement in the medical scriptures about incurable diseases? Answer: The statement in the medical scriptures that there are diseases that cannot be cured even slightly does not refer only to the faults of the disease, but rather considers the difficulty of finding doctors and medicines to treat the disease, or considers the patient's life being exhausted. Other than that, if it were only the fault of the disease, then there should be no incurable diseases, because if there is a disease, it must be curable with medicine. Third, the body after death will change due to poison and plague, etc., or cutting off the healed flesh of a poisonous snake is also a case. Why doesn't the dead body come back to life? Because there is a body that contradicts the cause of the mind's change. The second part has four points: If it is the immediate cause, then the reversal is established. If it is not a reversal, then it is not the immediate cause. Apply this to the specific situation. Avoid co-existence and contradiction. The first point is: In general, if the immediate cause does not change, it cannot cause the effect with the immediate cause to change, for example, if the clay does not change, then the pots, etc., produced from the clay as the immediate cause will not change. The second point is: If the cause does not change, then the cause of the effect changing should not be the immediate cause of that effect, for example, if the cow does not change, but milk, etc., will change, then the cow should not be the immediate cause of milk. The third point is: Mind and body are also dharmas.
