Many are not suitable as causes. Any universal that is relied upon is also not suitable as a cause. The first case is: Even according to your own view that cognitive awareness arises from other universals, then that cognitive awareness is the subject. It does not arise without relying on clarity, but merely from taking the universal itself as the object, because there is the fault of being too extreme. How so? The apprehension of universals is the subject. It is always too extreme to only cognize that universal itself, because it arises only from taking the universal as the object. If you accept this, then it will follow that clarity is not understood, because only the universal is known. If you also accept that, then it will follow that at no time will the two, the universal and the clarity it possesses, be apprehended in connection. Because at the time when clarity is not understood, that is why. If you also accept that, then how can you apply the term "clarity possesses the universal"? It will follow that you cannot apply it, because the clarities will not necessarily become connected with that universal. The refutation has been accepted. The second case is: If you say that the clarities that are aided by one universal entity are the causes of the object of the knowledge that apprehends universals, so there is no fault of the apprehension of universals not understanding clarity, then, one universal entity is the subject. Does it eliminate the distinctness of those clarities, or what? If it eliminates it, then it is too extreme. If it does not eliminate the distinctness, then because of the distinctness, that is, because of the reason of distinctness, you do not accept that those clarities are the cause of the cognition of one universal, but you make the distinct clarities the producers of the apprehension of universals. The third case is: If you say that many separate from the universal do not produce the wisdom of the universal, but if many clarities rely on one universal, then can the non-distinct produce the wisdom of the apprehension of the universal? The wisdom of the apprehension of the universal is the subject. Those clarities are powerless to produce you, which is too extreme. Because even without those individual clarities, that one universal itself can produce you. If you accept that, then the wisdom of the universal is the subject. It follows that you do not apprehend clarity by taking it as the object, because clarity does not have the power to produce you. If you say that the first extreme is uncertain, just as visual consciousness arises from each of blue and so on, so the collection of blue and so on does not become without the power to produce visual consciousness, similarly, because one universal has the power to produce the apprehension of the universal, so clarity does not become without the power to produce the apprehension of the universal.

If you say so, these two are not the same. For example, blue and other dharmas, you collections also have the ability to generate self-grasping eye consciousness, because each of you can also generate self-grasping eye consciousness, and can see this ability separately. For appearances, dharma, not relying on the general, whether alone or in a collection, it is not like that having the ability to generate general consciousness. Because if there is no general entity, it is impossible to generate general consciousness. Accepted subject. Fourth, if you say that relying on any of those appearances, the general can generate the consciousness of grasping the general, but it is not that the general alone can generate the grasping of the general, so the appearance does not have the ability to generate general consciousness, it is not like that. Those appearances, dharma, no matter how, are not only helpful to the general consciousness, but are helpful. Because it is helpful to that one general. Also, this general, dharma, will become the result of those appearances. Because the appearance is helpful. Both reasons are accepted, and there is pervasion, because whatever is helpful is the producer. Third, if you say that the general consciousness, dharma, does not want to arise from different appearances, because the appearances are not different, but appear as one. General consciousness, dharma, your appearances are appearing as different, because they hold those appearances as the same. If those appearances, dharma, no matter how, are objects to be grasped by consciousness, not grasped as one general, because the general grasping holds them as the same, so it is grasping. There is pervasion, if both the general and multiple appearances are grasped, it will be thought that the appearances are the same, and the cause of holding the same is the grasping of both the general and the appearance. If you say so, the consciousness of holding the same, dharma, is not produced from both the general and the appearance, but multiple appearances produce one result, because they are similar, so they produce you. If it is unreasonable for multiple to produce one result, because the results of gold vases and so on, the root consciousnesses are also different. Those eye consciousnesses grasping the vase, dharma, although they are different in meaning, there is no difference in kind in terms of elimination, because for the consciousness recognizing the vase, the cause of consciousness is the same.
