Because it is necessary to acknowledge that the three characteristics of sign, dharma, and meaning, which are the standards of measurement according to our school, are each their own self-characteristics, the need to extensively explain the distinctions of other-exclusion at this time would be lost. Therefore, I will explain the meaning here based on the instructions of the glorious Sakya Paṇḍita. Those who enjoy the secret words of logic, please bow your heads and listen. If exclusion has no other meaning, then the self-characteristics of exclusion would have no generality, because the self-characteristics do not follow each other, so there is no common substance, and since exclusion has no other meaning, there is also no other common substance. If this is said, then there are two generalities here, as it is said, "Each abides in its own essence," the common things of the self-characteristics that do not mix with each other, as it is said, "Returning from the things of others," are unrelated to things of the same kind and different kinds, that is, exclusion, and the opposite of this is the similarity of the self-characteristics that have exclusion, which is the nature of generality, as previously stated. That is to say, in short, dividing the same sound, from the perspective of exclusion, into three exclusions of sound, conditioned, and impermanent, this is the generality of sound, so it has been explained. As the Treasure of Reasoning says: "Other-exclusion has different uses, one can also have different exclusions." And "The necessity of dividing in this way is that one is not mistaken for another, and it is divided in order to be able to recognize." Just like this. Furthermore, the meaning of "furthermore" is that from the generality that distinguishes different things from one, from this, the generality that appears as different and one for thinking is explained. As the Treasure of Reasoning says: "For things with the same action and characteristics, due to the power of habit, they are attached to one." And "The necessity of summarizing into one is that for different things, the actions of affirmation and negation will become easy to understand." Just like this. Here, the three exclusions of sound, conditioned, and impermanent on the sound are all generalities, and the meanings of exclusion, generality, and other-exclusion are the same, which has been clearly stated in the root and commentary and in the Treasure of Reasoning, but it does not match even a part of the way of establishing generality and difference today, and establishing one's own school has already been shown in the meaning of generality. Therefore, as an answer to the previous doubt, the generality of distinguishing one into different things has been explained, and here it relies on things that are different from non-trees, clear trees, etc., trees that grow through lineage, etc.

The conceptual mind that perceives the appearances of trees as a single form of tree is the subject. The appearances of trees appear as a single form of tree because you (the conceptual mind) obscure the self-nature of others, namely the self-character of the tree appearances, with your own nature, the appearance produced by habit. This is pervasive. Because the obscurer, namely the conventional mind, obscures the fact that the tree appearances are distinct in themselves, but are actually distinct, therefore the objects of the trees appear as if they are not distinct, but like one, with some nature that is different from non-trees. The form of the tree that appears in the conceptual mind is the subject. Because of the influence of your thought that clings to the self-nature of external trees, it is strongly proclaimed that the tree appearances have a universal characteristic. Because you (the conceptual mind that clings to trees) appear as a conforming universal characteristic in the tree appearances. Therefore, the form that appears in the conceptual mind itself is, in the view of the conceptual mind itself, the direct object of expression of the universal characteristic and the word, and the names of the same basis and all affirmations and negations are also directly performed on it in the view of the conceptual mind itself, and saying that it is not established in meaning means that it is not established as one has examined it, and when other subsequent conceptual minds distinguish its mode of existence, because it is the apprehended aspect of the conceptual mind, it is the self-character, and the part that is examined in the meaning of the external object is the universal characteristic, therefore it is distinguished as not existing as an entity. As the self-commentary says: "Those who explain distinguish in that way, but those who apply names do not, because they combine the appearance of the mind, which is the only object that can function, and the meaning that needs to be distinguished, and then proceed." Thus it is said. Its meaning is as the Treasure of Reasoning says: "When explaining, be skilled by distinguishing, when entering, attain by confusing into one." Thus it is said. The form is a universal characteristic in itself, knowing in meaning is a self-character, the universal characteristic depends on clinging to external objects, the self-character is established by appearing clearly. This is what I say, is my word that I have understood the secret language of conceptual mind without reversing it. Secondly, the appearances of trees are the subject. The universal characteristic that the conceptual mind imputes in whatever way does not exist for you in the ultimate sense, because you do not conform to each other, so there is no single universal characteristic entity, and the meaning of the conforming universal characteristic is appearance.
