If other rational people know that his words have a true meaning, can they establish the meaning to be expressed from it? It is divided into two: For others, there is no superior person; for oneself, the superior person has been established. The first case is: If one can know that a superior person is such and such, then it is reasonable to admit that his words have a true meaning, but ordinary people, as a subject, find it difficult to truly know whether the other person is a superior person. Because it is difficult to find a valid cognition that takes the other person's faults or lack of faults as its object, such as the other person has such and such faults, or is not like that, this is understood by other Buddhists. The second is divided into three: showing that it is possible to eliminate faults; showing that it will not return after being eliminated; refuting the dispute about the cause of faults. The first case is: Then, will there never be a person who has exhausted faults? All dharmas such as greed, as a subject, have an antidote that is incompatible with themselves—the realization of selflessness, because when the realization of selflessness increases, you will decrease, and when the realization of selflessness decreases, you will become superior. Therefore, some individuals, as a subject, will exhaust all defilements, because by practicing the realization of selflessness for a long time, the mindstream will become the nature of the realization of selflessness. The second case is: Even if faults are exhausted once, will they return again, just like a mind that previously had faults later becomes without faults? By practicing the path, when one is away from all the near harms of samsara, there will be no harm, and impermanence and so on are objects of their own characteristics, therefore they are the nature of the path of true meaning, and the essence of the mind has become the antidote to faults, then, as a subject, the reversed, that is, the faults that are untrue, incorrect, and non-self-nature will not hinder it, because it is impossible to see faults on the path and see advantages in defilements, so one will not strive to eliminate it, and even if one strives, the mind will cling to the path—the realization of selflessness, that is, one will only strive for this. The third case is: If the increase and decrease of the realization of selflessness causes the cause of faults such as greed to increase and decrease, then the cause of faults will become self-grasping, and

If so, does it contradict what was said earlier that ignorance is the cause of faults? It does not contradict, because all the faults of samsara arise from the view of the aggregates as bad, and that view of the aggregates is ignorance. Therefore, there is a reason to say that the cause of faults is ignorance, because being controlled by ignorance, one becomes attached to the self, and from that, one becomes attached to what belongs to the self. From these two attachments, all faults such as hatred arise. In other sutras, it is said that the view of the aggregates as bad is the main cause, because abandoning the view of the aggregates as bad can abandon all faults. Third, the idea that sound can establish the truth is also just an appearance, and there are two aspects to this: refuting the establishment (of truth) by the sign of being non-human-made, and refuting the establishment by the sign of being unfailing. The first aspect has two parts: stating the desire and explaining the refutation. First, the Vedas are dharma, having true meaning, because whatever expresses meaning is not made by a person. It is universally established that the cause of words being of false meaning is faults, attachment, etc., and these depend on a person. Therefore, some logicians say that the Vedas are not deceptive in the meaning they express. The second aspect has three parts: refuting the pervasiveness of the root sign, refuting after examining the root reason, and refuting the root sign's object to be established. The first aspect has two parts: refuting with similar reasoning, and refuting with contradictory commitments. First, the Vedas are dharma, why are they not of false meaning? They should be of false meaning, because whatever expresses meaning is not made by a person. It is universally established that the reason why words are true is the qualities of wisdom and compassion, etc., and these depend on a person, which is what other Buddhists say. The second aspect has two parts: establishing the consequence, and refuting the fault-removal. First, the words of the Vedas are dharma, even though your nature is not made by a person, it is possible to show false meaning, because the cause of understanding meaning from you—the sign—depends on a person. The second aspect has two parts: stating the fault-removal, and refuting it. First, the reason is not established, because the relationship between the sound and meaning of the Vedas is not made by a person, but is self-
